Help! Terrible fingernails

Joyunlimited · 04/05/2025 08:20

My fingernails have always been awful - weak, bendy, tear very easily as soon as they grow to any length at all. I don’t like false fingernails. Surely there must be something I can paint on them that will dry really hard, but I can’t find it. Please can anyone help?

Have you had a full blood count to check for any deficiencies?

Biotin, among others, is a supplement you can take specifically for hair and nail strength. You should probably look into caring for the nail rather than using products that might do further damage.

I’ve tried it all, nothing really works. Some of it makes them worse. The only thing that does help is sun.

There’s a new opi repair product which has helped mine. Expensive but it works.

RosesAndHellebores · 04/05/2025 14:33

Mine are exactly the same. I keep them short and neat. I have taken supplements, used oils, hardener, etc. If you can remember to do it twice a day and keep it up Cutex Care Intense Recovery makes a bit of a difference.

Paradoxically my hair is OK. Very fine but tons of it.

Thank you! Repair Mode? Have just had a look though and am a bit worried by some reviews saying it made their nails lift from the nail bed…

Mine are awful. They're so soft they bend and snap. If they somehow manage to grow a tiny bit they'll flake away and then snap off.
The only thing that helps is an intense hand moisturiser, daily.

I guess it would also help if I kept them away from my mouth! I have a bad nibbling habit.

The malvern paint on stuff does harden then but then you get them splitting instead.

I have moved to using nail stickers (lily and Fox not the stuff you cure under a lamp). I use a base coat of strengthener then a sticker then a top coat. They can't split or chip or peel and I redo once a week. Not getting better but not doing any harm either.

I remember talking about this with friends years ago, and I still think there’s some truth in it. Anecdotally, the friends and family I have with strong nails are less happy with their hair. The ones with strong, growing hair have bad nails, including me.

I use BIAB, do it myself at home with a UV lamp.
It's not a cure but it works for me, my nails grow and don't break or flake.
I use a kit from Amazon, Base, BIAB and Top Coat, it's approx £9, the make is Modelsone.
The BIAB comes in clear or very pale pink, I buy the pink

Yes, I saw those reviews. All I can say is that it goes on like water and disappears into the nail, but definitely makes a difference when used as instructed twice a day for 6 days. I now use it as a base coat with a neutral colour over it. I’ve started avoiding dark colours—a manicurist told me they are bad for nails.

A Sally Hansen one did that to mine. I am predisposed to it due to thyroid problems (all treated) but it was extraordinary.

I’ve ordered it! (Cheaper on Amazon). Thank you.

Poor you. I tried Sally Hansen Hard as Nails and it was useless.
