Help! 2 different dresses for a wedding!

PlumTurtle · 16/04/2025 09:41

I've been invited to a wedding this summer with quite the specific dress code.

For the daytime, I need a floor length dress that's either pastel coloured or floral (with no white/cream).

For the evening, I need a different dress - also floor length but this time in a dark colour (they suggest black, navy or emerald) with the theme being sparkles and glamour.

I don't own anything like either of these and have quite the tight budget thanks to maternity pay. In an ideal world I'd get both for under £70 but I know that's not likely!

Please help! Any links would be greatly appreciated!

I would suggest vinted, or eBay or similar…I’ve bought some lovely formal-ish dresses there for a fraction of full price, those are very precise requirements…

Preciousssssss · 16/04/2025 10:22

After issuing such unreasonable requirements I hope the happy couple don’t expect gifts as well …

NeverTalksToStrangers2 · 16/04/2025 10:26

Those requirements are completely bizarre. Not only a very specific style of dress, but two?!

Vinted is your friend here, but I'd be tempted to turn up in a wedding dress just to spite them.

Saltedcarameltiramisucheesecake · 16/04/2025 10:37

Unless this is the wedding of a v close family member, I'd be declining.
Who tells people what to wear, ffs.

Starlight1984 · 16/04/2025 10:38

Who the hell requests that their guests get changed halfway through a wedding?! What about shoes, accessories, hair etc?

What about the men?! Guessing they can stay as they are!

Jesus why do people even entertain this nonsense.

JustAnInchident · 16/04/2025 10:40

Vinted will be your friend here. You’ll find something on there no issues and chances are it’ll be something v lightly worn too!

I'm new to vinted, how does it work if something doesn't fit?

I wouldn't be indulging these demands tbh. Quite ridiculous

You either go to the trouble of reselling or take it to a charity shop..

Angrymum22 · 16/04/2025 10:59

I would second Vinted. My sister is getting married this summer, although her only request was that I didn’t outshine her. She has chosen a lovely dress that is a shade Boho so I’ve splashed out on an understated silk dress ( not from Vinted) and have trawled Vinted for shoes to match. I found a pair of Russell & Bromley sling backs, worn once for £20. I can have them cleaned locally if needed. I also bought a pashmina from eBay. I may have to pay full price for a hat though because the shade I’m after is a bit specific.

Full price the shoes would have cost me £250-300 and I may only wear them once. I’m now looking for some cheap sliders or flip flops for when my feet give up.
The dress isn’t too weddingy so I will get plenty of wear out of it.

Many occasion dresses have only been worn once and you can find unworn prom style dresses. I’ve found that it’s worth looking on a daily basis because the turnover is quick.

What a pain. It would make me not want to go.

Could you get away without changing if your dress is both floral and dark?? Eg Something like this https://www.phase-eight.com/product/aylie-jersey-large-florals-maxi-dress-221093492.html#isSecondPage=false&srule=Storefront-price-low-to-high&start=0&sz=60&is=true&cgid=maxi&pid=221093492&pos=16

Id look on websites (marks, next, debenhams etc) and search for maxi dresses, the. Sort by low-high price and see if there’s anything in the sales. And if also probably try going to tkmaxx or primark or charity shops to see if they have something that would do without costing too much.

What shame though that you can’t just chose something you love.

Stickortwigs · 16/04/2025 11:06

This is insane. I can’t imagine dictating what someone should wear once never mind twice.

Preciousssssss · 16/04/2025 11:15

What a way to ensure your guests all arrive in cheap / second hand clothes they’ve resented paying for and don’t want to wear.

You don’t indicate there’s any specific religious or cultural background to these strictures? I would not be engaging with this venture unless there’s a very good reason for it.

catin8oot5 · 16/04/2025 11:16

I wouldn’t go

PlumTurtle · 16/04/2025 12:03

No religious/cultural aspect, just a 'fashionista' bride.
Groom is my cousin and my friend too so I'll be going.

Looks like I'm off to look at vinted. Any brands I should keep an eye out for?
