Hi there. I am wanting to buy 2 bottles of wine 1 x red and 1 x white for two different people. As i know nothing about wine, never bought a bottle before and have no idea the difference between a sauvignon and a rioja(only know this due to goggle) what would you suggest. It dosent have to cost anywhere near £25 a bottle but equally i am hoping that would get you an amazing bottle but again i have no idea...
Thanks in advance for any responses

So hard as wine is very personal I find , I would say that a Merlot ( red ) & a Sauvignon blanc are possibly the most popular grape types , but that’s literally because most of my peers would drink those.
Personally I’m a Shiraz drinker & prefer new world ( Australian ) rather than French / European , but I’m no expert and never spend more than about £8 on a bottle so a heathen you could say!
If I was buying for stranger in a supermarket go for Tesco finest or equivalent, that way the recipient will know you’ve made a bit of effort , you’ll prob get those for the £12 mark .
Fine wine is probably around £25 + a bottle but it’s not my bag, I’d ask in supermarket ( Waitrose sometimes have wine experts what their most popular sellers are & go from there )
good luck 🤞

Thanks so much for replying... yes i feel like its not just as simple as buy a bottle of red any red etc as like anything else in life we all have favourites. Its like i love chocolate and have a fav brand but if someone bought me another brand i would eat it and enjoy it but would really prefer my fav brand. I cant ask anything specific about preference etc and as i know nothing about wine i was hoping someone would say buy this bottle etc and others would agree its a lovely wine!!. Can i ask can you tell the diff between say a £8 bottle and a £20 bottle. Maybe i should buy a voucher for like majestic wine or equivalent

I'd like either of your original choices! New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc rather than Chilean or SA is my preference.
£12 ish will get you a really nice drinkable bottle.

Where do you normally shop or what options of supermarkets are easy to you? I have a wee book & can look up the best rated in your shop if it helps?

Ilovemyshed · 31/03/2025 21:56

I would go for something a bit out there .. English sparkling from Nyetimber is hard to beat. Renishaw Walled Garden Red is amazing, from the English Wine project.

I'd probably go to Waitrose if I could and get a couple of nice bottles from there. I'd probably go with a barolo for the red because they're hard to find at a low price point so it would be a treat for me for.

For something less expensive, I've also been pleased with the Sainsbury's taste the difference crémant before. That's made using the champagne method but not in Champagne.

Can you get some sort of a voucher? Or a couple of months membership to a wine club that send out bottles each month? No idea what this would cost but seems a safer investment
