Iso-fix or no iso-fix for new car seat?

Ds has just turned 2 but is very tall for his age and is too big for his current car seat, shoulders way over the top holes for the straps. He currently has a Britax seat which I have been very pleased with. I need to get a new seat and was hoping for some advice, especially when it comes to iso-fix seats

Main questions I have are

Is an iso fix system worth it for older children car seats?
If fitted can the seat be removed and the place used as an adult seat iyswim?
What would people recommend as a good next stage seat?

apologies if I don't reply to comments till later btw as I'm off swimming with ds now!

We have isofix seats for our four and five year olds. I absolutely love them. I feel they are safer than just relying on the seatbelt to hold them in place. They are very easy to fit and remove as they just clip in and out. We have the Britax Evolva 123. You do need to make sure it fits properly in your car. Check the Britax website as they have a 'fitfinder' which will tell you which seats in your make of car the carseat will fit in.

Isofix is way safer than using seatbelt - there'll be a new Which test out next month which will give the low down on exactly how much safer, and which ones are best if you can wait a couple of weeks - DH has a subscription so I can post back with the best buys.

would be really interested to hear about the best buys whenit comes out!

thanks for that info, yes more than willing to wait until which report comes out cm!

does the isofix system make the seat unusable for anything other than a car seat?

good info re isofix here

Norwichmummy, it's something that your car either has or doesn't have - you can't 'install' it and the fixing points are invisible when not in use (down in the gap between the seat and the seat back, iyswim).
If you have it, def get an isofix seat as they are safer than belted seats, but if you don;t have it, choose the safest belted seat when the new Which report comes out.

I think you might have it confused with some infant rear-facing seats that use an isofix base that stays in the car when you lift the baby carrier out to go on the pushchair or wherever.

Ah yes think you're right there MrsB! I suppose the thing is that our original car seat was bought for us as a present by my folks so never did any research into them, hence why I'm totally confused! THanks for info, my car does have isofix points so will def go for one

cmotdibbler i'm really interested to know if much safer or just taking advantage of paranoid parents like myself. would really appreciate hearing the which findings, so i'll watch this post. i like the idea of the ones that spin to the door making it easy to get them in/out - anyone have experiance of these?
