Reins - Yes or No?

My DS is nearly 15 months and now he is walking quite confidently and independently wants to get out of his pushchair and walk wherever we are. We were out and about today and I was trying to keep hold of his hand and push the pushchair and juggle oranges (well, not quite but you know what I mean) and I wondered whether life would be easier and he would be safer if he were on reins.

I know nothing about them - does anyone have any experience? Should I get some? Are there different types?

TIA

oh fgs, someone get controversial please!

misdee · 12/01/2005 21:21

I think children on reins lookm like dogs on leads, and reins should be outlawed!!

Piffle · 12/01/2005 21:46

No never hate them, will that do?
Would never judge anyone else for using them though, just for me it would feel wrong...

Piffle · 12/01/2005 21:46

Obviously as I find stapling them to the pram far less hassle

misdee · 12/01/2005 21:47

superglue works just as well.

Oh! another classic mis-reading of a thread title, I thought this one said "penis-yes or no?"

Didn't use them once with DS1 - bought them tried them once and never used them again. Thankfully he's always been really good with roads and even this afternoon I just 'strolled' across a road on the way to nursery (as I knew it was safe) and he shouted at me "mummy - you have to STOP before you cross the road - come back" - he's 4! However he didn't walk until he was 17 1/2 months old - and wasn't really 'walking' places until he was almost 2 1/2yrs old - so more of an age where it was 'easier' to keep track of him.

However I think DS2 is going to be a completely different kettle of fish. He's only 13 months old and walked back from nursery the other day - it takes me 10 minutes on my own!!! He held my hand all the way - but is a fesity, little boy who as soon as he sees his jacket coming off the hanger runs away!!

Superglue? That's so cruel!

Everyone knows that velcro-ing them works just as well.

coppertop · 12/01/2005 21:54

Davros!

I used a wrist-strap with ds1. There's no way that ds2 will be venturing out without being attached to me by something. Actually superglue is starting to sound appealing........

Davros!! PMSL

Think reins are brilliant - found them very useful with DS and agree with laylasmum about the wobbly bit. When DS was still unsteady I could jerk the reins and he would stay upright. Is that vaguely controversial?

Actually though I think it can be more comfortable for parent and child than holding hands - one gets a bad back, the other has their little arm stretched upwards. The other advantage from the child's POV is that they have both hands free for exploring.

LMAO @ Davros
