I was today years old when I realised bags for life were bags for life 🤯

Honestly, I just found out that if your bag for life gets damaged, you can take it back to the supermarket, and they’ll replace it for free! I always thought "bag for life" was just a fancy way of saying "sturdier plastic bag" but no—it's literally for life. How did I not know this?! Have I been throwing them away like an absolute fool all these years?! 😩
Please tell me I'm not the only one who only just figured this out...

I did not know they would be replaced for free either. Its not like it's written on the label or something! It's not, i just checked...

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 10/02/2025 09:26

Not everywhere has the same replace-when-worn-out policy - although they probably aren't allowed to call them bags for life.

Some bigger convenience store chains sell stronger bags, but they won't replace worn ones.

I still love a cartoon I saw in Private Eye years ago where mourners are all sad and sombre at a funeral wake, then the phone suddenly rings - and it's Sainsbury's asking for all the deceased person's bags for life back!

Ugh. Today years old. Hate this phrase. It's as bad as 'I can't even'

lemongrizzly · 10/02/2025 09:32

Wait, what? In which shops?!

EarlierDistraction · 10/02/2025 09:35

Sainsburys have always done this. But the bags seem to be indestructible so I've never tried it, also got a DH who is always forgetting to take them and buying more so we have dozens of them.

MWNA · 10/02/2025 09:35

Sandra - do you also hate "wait, what?" ?

Sadcafe · 10/02/2025 09:35

I knew they could but have I ever take a damaged one back, no.

318 sleeps till Christmas!😀

JC03745 · 10/02/2025 09:38

I knew this and have had them replaced a few times.

My problem is, I forget to the take the broken bag to the correct shop, so now have several in my boot!

I quite like today years old, I can't even think of why you wouldn't.

Don't mind that 🙂

Wait, what? In which shops?!

Waitrose, Iceland, Co-Op all in my area do this.
I usually have a string bag/tote bag/folding bag with me though.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 10/02/2025 09:42

And back to point of thread, yes @BargainBagger11 I did know they replace used ones but only because when BFL started being a thing about 15 years ago the shops all made a really big deal about it with signs up reminding people to bring them back and swap them. Strange how they've stopped doing it considering how much more environmentally conscious everyone is now.

ellebelli · 10/02/2025 09:42

My children constantly say "wait, what?!" Drives me mad.
They also say lots of other stupid things they hear on YouTube.

Also "wait, what...?"🙄

YourWinter · 10/02/2025 09:43

Waitrose stopped free replacements probably 4-5 years ago, when they introduced their current thick 50p carrier bags. The bag for life scheme applied to the old 10p bags and yes, you gave back your old one and got a new one free. When they stopped selling 10p bags, you could return your old one and get 10p off a new 50p bag!

Ariela · 10/02/2025 09:44

I can't see the point of 'bags for life', since they clearly are not, and as such create waste.
Give me a nice jute handled bag, esp one by Emma Bridgewater, it's much more comfortable to lug about when full, plastic always makes my fat fingers itchy and swell if I carry for more than half a mile (is a very lengthy (and muddy atm walk to nearest shops)

They're £1 now , outrageous ! But so seem particularly strong & will outlast all of us 😂

Sainsburys and Tesco.

CountryVic · 10/02/2025 10:14

Our local shops have fabric boomerang bags, made by local sewing groups, you can use and return, or keep, I think you can buy them too.

In Australia we say “yeah, nah” but I like “wait, what?” But hate “today years old”.

@lilyorange 👏spot on.

P00hsticks · 10/02/2025 10:36

I took one back to M&S recently - they will give you a replacement but they're only made of strong paper, not plastic, now.
