My MODEM has started to burn up and smoke
RTKangaMummy · 11/01/2005 12:28
My modem started to make a strange noise and it stopped the connection but then reconnected.
Then smoke started to come out of it
Unplugged it and then felt it was very hot underneath.
It is a dial up modem, that we have had for several years,
It was very lucky that I was on mumsnet and so therefore right next to it.
If DS had been using it he may not have realised until smoke was really bad, it was smelling horrible after we had picked it up.

Do you think even though it is several years old
That we can take it back and complain?
It is a US ROBOTICS one that we got from PC WORLD
RTKangaMummy · 11/01/2005 12:37
It happened yesterday afternoon
BUT I had used it in the morning and then we had gone out for lunch and I told DH to unplug it and turn it off
but that was because of the worry about other hackers using it to control my computer to dial premium numbers etc
NOT because of fire.
It didn't even trip a fuse even though it was on one of those bar things with plugs etc.
just a noise like interference and then smoke{shock]

I knew you would think I was being funny
but actually I am for once being serious
I am so glad that I have the laptop it has an internal modem.
BUT do you think there is any point in taking it back?
I had only been using it for about 1 hour before this happened
RTKangaMummy · 11/01/2005 12:44
I feel that I wanted to warn other people that this could happen with theirs too
edam · 11/01/2005 12:45
OMG! This didn't affect any other appliances, did it? Only apparently in North London they had a power surge recently which caused electrical fires across a whole area...
RTKangaMummy · 11/01/2005 12:47
No the computer was fine
DS was watching TV and that was fine
It was yesterday about 4.20pm
jangly · 11/01/2005 12:48
I Would say, after several years. write to the manufacturers rather than take it back to shop.
RTKangaMummy · 11/01/2005 12:51
sorry secur
didn't mean to be horrible to you
I just wanted to make the point that I was not joking
as I realise that most of my time on mumsnet is not serious
RTKangaMummy · 11/01/2005 12:56
I wasn't being horrid but it is funny really what you said
lol told DH what mumsnet had said and he laughed too.
But I knew that most people here wouldn't believe I was being serious if I put it in jokey way
RTKangaMummy · 11/01/2005 12:58
Perhaps I will write to US ROBOTICS although it is about 3 years old it hasn't been used for all that time because of being with TISCALI broadband for about 8 months.
Maybe also write to PC WORLD HO too
RTKangaMummy · 11/01/2005 12:59
I would have expected it to give more warning though wouldn't you?
Or trip the fuse?
jangly · 11/01/2005 13:00
Oh yes! I see what secur means! LOL. surprised mine's not smoking sometimes!
