I am going for 4 days skiing trip at the start of Feb. I have never been and none of my friends have been either.

I know I need skiing gear which is fine. But what do I wear when I'm not skiing? Do I need normal winter coat? Boots ? Trousers ? I am mighty confused what to take especially as I haven't been in the snow in many many years.

Budget is also limited...

Help 🙏

Fleece buff (snow doesn’t stick to the fleece like it does to wool)

Mittens are warmer than gloves. Hestra are brilliant but expensive. I spent more on my mittens than my trousers!

Snow + Rock is an expensive place to shop. If you see something you like, Google the product name/code and it will come up cheaper on websites like Snow Inn and Alpine Trek.

The tiny tubes of Ultrasun Face SPF50 are pocket-sized and prevented even my Scottish skin from burning.

def get a thin hat. I was skiing yesterday and it was freezing. Thin hat and buff definitely needed.

I haven’t ever had anything stolen in a ski resort and we live in one so go often. Haven’t ever seen anyone lock skis up.

I like sorrel boots for in thick snow, and fellhof lined boots for out and about. I can drive in the fellhof as a non thick sole

if you read the local boards for the likes of Avoriaz, Morzine and Les Gets, skis go missing all the time. Sometimes just taken in error (especially the hired ones), others definitely stolen if they’re covetable.

Yep, wouldn't really be that bothered about hire skis - although obviously they can be taken by accident. But good skis, and especially snowboards, should be locked up.

When people are saying go ‘high’ for snow at Easter, do you have any examples?

Usually with a glacier, so Kaprun, Zermatt, Saas Fee, Tignes, Alpe dHuez, and appropriate skiing 1500/2000m

Somewhere where the town and most if not all of the skiing is above 1700 metres and there’s a glacier is your best bet for ensuring good snow. Val d’Isere/Tignes are my favourites in France. Up until a few years ago they had summer skiing and Tignes was known as the 365 day a year ski resort. Sadly global warming has done away with skiing the glacier in August but March/April will be dependably snow sure thanks to the high altitude and 2 glaciers.

Zermatt, Val Thorens, Lech
