maclaren xt for a newborn?

I'm thinking of getting one because I use buses quite a lot and want to make sure that I can get into cafes etc with minimum fuss.

But I've never seen a newborn in one. Has anyone used one from birth?

We used baby carrier (a stretchy wrap) from birth and held off getting buggy until needed - then got an XT when DS was nearly 3 months old. I know some people think XT isn't really flat enough for newborn... but as someone who had baby in wrap I don't see how that can matter, so long as baby's head does not slump and restrict airway, or is in pram for v long periods of time (problem for back??). With XT baby does not face towards you, hence I preferred wrap early on. However there's now Bugaboo Bee which is light and adaptable, if you've money to splurge... Buses can be problem no matter what buggy, if there is already a buggy aboard or no buggy space . Wraps most useful for this!

My sister did for both her DD's and if I was going to do my time again then I'd definitely do it because it seems to work out just fine for a newborn (the only disadvantage being that your baby's facing away from you, if that's an issue), it's definitely easier for getting on/off buses and in/our your car boot, and it saves you loads of money. EVERYONE I know bought an expensive first pram, which they used for about 4 or 5 months and then ditched in favour of a Maclarens. Go for it I say!

thanks! feel quite confident about buying one now!
I was also thinking about having a sling/wrap for the first few weeks, but heard that you're not supposed to have the baby in it for more than a couple of hours (same as car seats). but I imagined feeding every few hours would mean that they wouldn't be in the same position for too long anyway.

I had a Baby Bjorn which you are only supposed to be able to use once the baby gets to 10lbs or thereabouts, I think. They are certainly good to have, both from the point of view of being able to carry your baby around in places where buggies would be a nightmare and also in case they are having one of those 'won't settle, am going to cry and cry unless you pick me up' days when you are at the end of your tether ... it's also really nice to have your baby right next to you, all cozy and up close, but I'd definitely put it in the 'would be really nice to have' as opposed to 'it's a necessity' category, simply because they seem to grow out of them/get too heavy for them so quickly. In saying that, it's also a good item to have on your 'if you want to buy me a present then consider this' list!

Presumably your baby's going to spend quite a lot of time in it's cot/moses basket/whatever for the first couple of weeks at least so will be good and flat then ... unless it's a second baby and then it'll spend most of it's time in the car seat/buggy/sling ... wherever it's needed in order to get DC1 wherever it needs to be on time! To be honest, all babies seem to turn out the same way in the end, however they spend the first weeks/months of their lives!

Hi Having been on what feels like a diploma in prams for the last 4-5 months, I know that Maclaren are stating that the XT is suitable from birth although not completely flat. Theyve brought out a much fancier version with head hugger, foot muff the works which would certainly make baby a bit snugger than previously. I have had one for about 4 years now and they're indispensable generally. I admit that I didnt buy it from birth because I had a lie flat car/seat which fitted onto a chassis. Its very hard - as has already been mentioned everyone seems to switch to a Maclaren or similar in the end.
I also have a baby bjorn sling which is great in that its fairly easy to put baby in although did hurt my back a little. I had a wilkinet previously which are meant to be designed with your back in mind but have such long straps that you wind round you that they are impossible to do up unless you can put your baby down first on top of the sling.
Good luck with your choices. As Snow storm said, Im sure little one will be just fine whichever combination you go for!!

DeeRiguer · 01/05/2008 21:35

yes i used one from ds birth it was really fine good city pram ideal for getting around with and no problems with it at all, do recommend

infact have just given it to a friend for her baby now

the new XT is flatter (the XLR with headhugger, apron and liner is a lot bigger though) and is fine for a newborn. i would invest in the proper footmuff for it to make it more padded and warmer for a newborn.

this is the only stroller i would actually use for a newborn.

I used one from when DS was about two weeks old, with footmuff/liner and headhugger. It's stil going strong four years later!
