Cheap lightweight stroller - is it worth it?

I currently have a Bugaboo Chameleon and I think it is great for my normal day to day buggy use. However, we're going on holiday and I was thinking about buying a very cheap umbrella fold stroller just for taking dd (who will be 13mo at that point) out for lunch. We'll be staying in a small Scottish village so she would be in it for a 10/15minute walk each way at the very most (who knows- she may even be able to toddle some of the way).

She refuses to sleep in her buggy so it doesn't need to be somthing she can sleep in.

I'm just looking for something that I can take into a cafe/resturant and fold up easily - and that will not take up too much room in the car and won't break the bank.

So come on all you MN buggy experts - let me have your ideas!

make sure its got swivel front wheels - other than that they ae briliant for stashing under tables.

TK Maxx have a mclaren for £30 at the moment and it looks fab, am almost tempted to wreck the one am currently using

Louise2004 · 30/04/2008 10:31

We had one - definitely well worth it for travel!

The airlines will also usually let you take the lightweight ones right up to the door of the plane on departure and, depending on your destination airport, they usually bring it to the door of the plane for you on landing too. (If you're really lucky they'll let you take it on board!)

MrsMattie · 30/04/2008 10:32

Always worth having a lightweight folding buggy for travelling in my opinion.

meep · 30/04/2008 10:33

dizzy - I just might be able to persuade dh that £30 is a reasonable investment!

Good tip re the swivel wheels - I hadn't thought of that - not sure if the cheaper than cheap £14.99 ones have those!

I have to say I think £30 is a great price, it has great swivel wheels that are really sturdy looking, I bought a really really cheap one once and it was a false economy as it just got wrecked

am not known for being kind to my buggies though AND we live in an unforgiving scottish village so now have buggy in car for town and pram for here

meep · 30/04/2008 10:42

dizzy - we may be heading to your neck of the woods for our hols - so if you spot your McLaren stroller with a 13mo in August on their way for some lunch - come and say hi! Which TK Maxx did you see it in?

lol, the one in dundee, have just been looking at kiddiecare online but can't see the one am talking about

my friend actually has it and she loves it

will keep looking

lilyloo · 30/04/2008 10:45

would say make sure it has swivel wheels and can recline if it's for sleeping.

mustsleep · 30/04/2008 10:48

yes just make sure it has swivel wheels as already advised otheriwse it will be awful to push

if you plan to use a lot after you could get a quinny zapp you can those now on ebay for about £50 they are great to push and fold very very small if you need it to not be there for a bit

dizzydixies · 30/04/2008 10:50

I can't find it every mclaren I see online looks too fancy for this one, and its a great one too
basic but sturdy with good wheels and a recline too

zapps don't recline if thats what you're after

i got the cosotto hula stroller last year as we had a holiday planned (ended up not going actually!) and i adore it, i use it all the time now and the old buggy gets no use at all!

it's light enough to push with one hand while holding dd's hand on roads
it has a sunshade (ds is one of those people who blisters in even the tiniest bit of sun
the rain cover is uber small when folded and can be attached over the sunshade so at this time of year when it can be sunny one second and pouring the next i don't have to switch them i just clip the rain cover over the sunshade
it's so light to carry folded up that i actually carry it when we go for a walk in the country in case one of the kids gets too tired and wants to ride
it takes up half the space in the car boot or hallway

and it's purdy

here it is, although that's very expensive, i got it in mothercare for 90 euros a year ago!

geordieminx · 30/04/2008 10:55

Have you thought about looking on ebay?

I got a M&P Aria for £16 including a car seat that I didnt need. It was fab on our holidays.

dizzydixies · 30/04/2008 11:20

am going into retail park later so will try and nip in and see what its called, if they still have any

meep · 30/04/2008 11:26

I'll pop into our biggest TK Maxx too.
Thanks for all the ideas - I know now that I will NOT be going for the £14.99 non-swivel wheel type!
