Dairy products over a year out of date

Got my shopping delivered today. Made a meal for myself and child, adding the dairy product that was delivered today. Took a few bites of said dairy product and it didn’t taste right. Looked at label and it’s over a full YEAR out of date.
Contacted supermarket in question and they’ve apologised and asked me to bring it asap in so they can investigate.
I don’t want to be ill but I’ve already thrown up after having it today.
I don’t know how ill I could get. Worried as I’m a working single parent, and angry they’ve put my health in jeopardy when my child has no one else.

They mentioned that compensation can be looked into once they investigate. What should I realistically be expecting? It cost under a fiver but obviously was very dangerous and I ate it. I don’t think a £20 voucher will cut it.

If you sought compensation through legal means, the amount paid out would relate to the amount of harm done. it's gross but doesn't sound like any major long term damage, no loss of earnings etc

if you've thrown up you've probably got it out of your system. you only ate a few bites.

I suspect they know they've hugely messed up. If it was me I'd ask for a £50 voucher and think myself lucky if they gave me it.

OMGsamesame · 05/12/2024 17:35

I wouldn't be taking it in. I'd send them as many photos as they liked and offer someone to collect it

I mean you have been sick, nothing else. You won't be getting a high payout.

I would be contacting Food Hygiene/Trading Standards at my local council.
A few days out of date is bad but a whole year? Clearly practices are not in place in that supermarket. (I run a business and know Food Hygiene would have a field day if we did this, supermarkets have the Scores on the Door scheme as well).
It's inexcusable and I would not be giving the supermarket the time of day. Take it far higher.

Separately I would call and inform environmental health.

Thanks eauneu, I’ve just scared myself a bit seeing that food poisoning can start a couple of days in, and of course it being over a year out of date I have no idea how extra ill that could make me (if that’s a thing!). I will count myself lucky if the vomiting is the end of it, I have no experience of these things and didn’t want them to get off lightly so to speak.

Wondering how on earth it can be so far out of date Most modern scanners wouldn't let you scan it on your shopping if its even a day out of date.

jackstini · 05/12/2024 20:11

Am wondering if it's been labelled with the wrong year?

As you said 'more than a year' it may only have been a couple of weeks out

Still bad - but hope you don't get too ill

ROYGBIVain · 05/12/2024 21:49

Thanks everyone.
Yeah I don’t quite believe it myself and had to do many double takes and thought I was reading smth wrong, but no it says Nov 2023. I can’t imagine how this was sent to me, mislabelling maybe like one poster mentioned?? Who knows but I’d like an explanation (hopefully),

The scanner on the till? How would it know?

Old sour cream would be mouldy solid & stink.

3bluellamas · 04/08/2025 07:33

Can you post a photo of the label. It would be nigh on impossible for the product from a supermarket to be a year out of date.

3bluellamas · 04/08/2025 07:34

In fact that’s almost two years out of date. The systems just don’t work like that

This threads almost as out of date as OPs sour cream was

How did it look when you opened it? I’d imagine it would be a solid lump after 18 months. Certainly not in a state where you wouldn’t notice and eat it. Wasn’t the tub contracted? Usually dairy shrinks in on itself when it starts to go off. And the smell!?
