Advice please - How old for bunk beds - I'm expecting no3!

First of all - sorry can't do emoticons- as I have some sticky keys - thanks to dd1!

I am expecting dc3 in December (on the assumption that everything goes O.K). By then DD1 will be just over 4 and dd2 will be nearly 3. They are currently in separate bedrooms in cotbeds set up as beds.

I am intending to put the dd's in the same bedroom (unless do a loft conversion).

Are they too young for bunk beds. (question mark). Although, the bedroom is supposed to a double bedroom I think it may be a bit tight to have two single beds - esp as I'd like the dd's to have some 'playspace'.

DC3 would be in with me and dp for a few months anyway - so the dd's wouldn't need to be in the bunk beds straight away.

Any advice will be gratefully received.

TIA (smile emoticon)

DS went into a bunk bed at 5. Now he's bored of it and wants to come down to ground again. He's 8.5.

I think its recommended they be 6 to go in the top bunk but I think it depends on he child. My dd was 4 when she decided she was sleeping in the top bunk and she never had a problem.

Seona1973 · 29/04/2008 21:33

my sisters ds's are in bunks. They were 4 and 3 when they went into them

Tiggerish · 29/04/2008 21:33

my ds had a cabin bed at 2.8 because of the imminent arrival of dd. Never had a problem with it. It's great cos you don't lose any play space - he has a really cool den with curtains around underneath.

I know you said that they do not need to have bunk beds yet but have you thought that if you get them now they will get used to sleeping together before the baby arrives. Also the change will not happen all at the same time.

Mine went in this year at 4 and 5 (oldest child on top bunk). They love it! We chose a top bunk with a rail that goes almost the full length of the bed so feel he's safe up there.

LIZS · 30/04/2008 08:14

I think 6 is often the recomendation for a top bunk, 4 as a minimum

dizzydixies · 30/04/2008 08:25

friend has just bought them for hers and the eldest was 4 when he went into the top bunk

rail only leaving the stairs at the end and the wee one is no problem on the bottom

mine share a room and they love it, am not on bunk beds yet but my youngest isn't 2 yet, good luck

Mine were in bunk beds from 4 and 2, they were fine. Quite sensible about it. I threatened them with dire things if they bounced on the top bunk and directed them to another mattress if they felt they had to bounce.

I love bunks, they have so much opportunity to play. Like an indoor climbing frame/wendy house/den.

My friend had her ds and dd sharing a room until recently, they used a bed with a pull out bed underneath. They just tidied the bedroom at night to take out the guest bed for the youndest to sleep in. It worked for them in a very small room.
