How does Wii Fit work? As in what's all this 'unlocking' games etc?

We have a Wii Fit. It's sitting in a cardboard box, from Amazon, awaiting DHs birthday on Thursday. Thing is, I have no idea what you can DO on it (I gather there's skiing, yoga etc) but how do you get to 'unlock' new stuff? Reach a certain level on existing stuff? Meet your target? Gain points? How does it all work?! I should add I can't even manage a circuit of Mario Karts.... Computer games, by and large, don't do it for me but I think the Fit may have promise IF I can get my head around it!

I don't know Wii Fit (don't have one) but generally, on Wii games, you unlock things by reaching a certain level on the things you have access to at the start.

Help please, DS wants one for his B'day.

Yes you reach a certain level or spend a certain amount of time on it (I think) and then it unlocks new games, some are there from the beginning.

I am fairly useless and have managed to unlock several things...snowboarding tonight!!

I'm going to try Wii for the first time this week as I am thinking of getting it. Would love to hear people's opinions of it, Wii Fit in particular.

I love our Wii. I am not usually a fan of computer games/consoles but the Wii is fab. I have played loads of the sports games with the children (5 and 6) and we've had so much fun. I also find that it is something grandparents can play with the children and they all really enjoy it.

Wii Fit is new so it's hard to say how good it'll be long term but I've loved it so far, the balance games (ski slalom, ski jumping etc.)are hilarious and the aerobic stuff is fun too.

We are wii addicts - just got wii fit and we're all really enjoying it! Don't worry about understanding it, it'll show you what to do as you go along.

I love my wii fit but the children are already bored of it!!! I think its more for adults as there are step aerobices etc the better you get the more they unlock, and the more time you spend on it the more it unlocks like brain training

Thanks! DH opened his Wii fit last night and is a very happy bunny. And I nearly wet myself laughing at him! We all put our statistics in and I SO impressed them all by having an initial age of 33- seeing as I'm overweight and 45! But that was purely on that balancing thing you do at the very start. Once I had a go at the ski slalom, the Truth came out. I was rubbish- I ploughed through EVERY flag! However, I can see it has potential, and DH is determined to get better. I have to say I do find one's ability to stand perfectly still and balanced a funny way to assess one's actual 'fitness'!

...Like with the Nintendo DS's Brain Trainer where your ability to get a stupid bit of plastic to UNDERSTAND one's PERFECTLY GOOD ENGLISH as you shout "BLUE!" increasingly loudly and desperately at it over and over again dictates your brain age!

Strange question I know, but is there anyway you can not let anyone else know how much you weigh with the wii fit? DH is blissfully unaware that I am a stone heavier than he thinks I am, and I don't want to break that illusion but really want one!!

MNersanonymous · 03/05/2008 21:46

Stupid question here - would the Wii Fit games be a good way for me to get fitter and lose weight or are they more about fun (sorry am utterly clueless beyond seeing the ad!!)

SorenLorensen · 03/05/2008 21:53

Dh opened his today (for his birthday) and we haven't got a thing done all day - it's really good. He was rather put out when it declared he was overweight and with a BMI of 26.9 though (I told him he'd put on weight...) I pmsl when it "larded up" his Mii I like the yoga and the hula hooping and the jogging but I am atrocious at the step (dh is very good at step, I suspect secret aerobics classes). The kids are really enjoying it too - ds1 has been being a "tree" and a "warrior" all over the shop today.

MNersanonymous - I think if you did it every day it would be a reasonable exercise routine - some of the exercises do work up a sweat. I'm not sure I'll be motivated enough to do it every day though.

SorenLorensen · 03/05/2008 21:58

miljee - my DS can't understand my pronounciation of "blue" either - and I really don't have much of an accent. I just keep yelling "blue...blue...BLUE you buggering thing!" at it til it gets it.

ZeMNetterWithZeBigBoobies · 03/05/2008 22:12

It tries to offer all round fitness - flexibility/stretching, aerobic and Weights.

Which I think is very good.

I need to work a lot on my posture, it's a laziness hereditary thing.
