New soft mattress for elderly mother

My Mum is tiny and has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer. She asked us today to get her a new soft mattress as she has aches and pains. Any recommendations please?

Mattresses can be a difficult buy as it’s only after spending a couple of hours on them that a full assessment can be made. A Simba mattress we bought a year ago had a 200 day return guarantee - no quibble money back which was very reassuring. You might look for other retailers who offer a similar option.

If you have imput from macmillans or your district nurses they can order a pressure relieving mattress for your mother. Ask at your GPs if not under them for a referral/visit💐

Hi @Mossstitch Mum is currently in her own double bed at the moment. District nurse said they can only provide a single mattress. It’s fine though, we are happy to buy a double.

I am very sorry to read this but have you considered that a soft mattress does make it difficult to reposition yourself but maybe more 'medical' type ones do not do this.

I’m so sorry your mum and your family are going through this. It’s awful and so sad.

If she has any current joint pain at all, a soft mattress might exacerbate that. There’s not enough support in a soft mattress.
This I know from personal experience.

If you can find one with a money back guarantee that might be worth a try.

Alternatively, buy a “medium” one and get a nice quality thick topper? That might be worth a try.

Have you thought about trying a mattress topper first?
You can buy really soft fluffy ones.
Your dm would have the support from the mattress but the softness of the topper.
Have a look on Dunelm

If someone is small then actually a soft mattress is what is needed to relieve pain. Soft doesn't mean saggy, it means the support is appropriate for someone around 9 ish stone, and therefore turning is fine. OPs mum may really need a soft mattress for proper support.

I can recommend a Silentnight Airflow 1000 10cm thick mattress topper. We bought one because our mattress is too firm for me. I am quite thin.

I have been extremely pleased with the comfort, I really sink into it but the mattress underneath is supportive at the same time. Mine was about £38 from Amazon.

Hope you find something comfy for your Mum.
