If I want to just make the stairs out of bounds for the minding part of the day.
Dh really does not want to go back to having a gate fixed to the staircase.
Anyone tried one?

Not that brand, but I have a very similar one, which we used when we stayed at relatives' houses. They're a bit of a pain if you need to go through them too often, but good if you don't need access to the other side.

We tried one but found it a real faff - no instructions as to how to unfold it or make it smaller/bigger - we just accidentally found out once we'd realised that it would be too big for the space we needed it. It still has to be attached with those pressure whatsits I believe (i.e. the ones you turn to make them fit) so you may as well go for a 'normal' pressure fit one.

What are his objections to having a fixed one? If it's ust because he doesn't want the faf of going through it every time have you thought about trying the Lindam Rollerblind type? I still have it up even though ds is now 4 so I can stop them going downstairs in the night but during the day it rolls away into a small tube fixed to the wall, so is really unobtrusive.

The pair of wooden lindam gates we had (at the top and bottom of the stair case) have not long been removed. The screw holes have now been filled and painted.
The one at the bottom had to be fixed to the the door frame of the play room and every time it got swung back too far it would pull the wood away from the wall.
As all the toys are in the playroom and we have a downstairs loo, it wouldn't be necessary to use upstairs during the day.
As I am just setting up as a childminder (including overnight care) we need to think about putting them back up.
Upstairs will be fine.
I think he feels like during our free time we should be able to move around freely.
