Help me think of something for MIL to buy DS for his second birthday

Budget is 20 quid. DH is very, very fussy about stuff (no grief about this please, he really does have massive AS traits), and can't cope with any more plastic tat in the house. PIL have asked our opinion on some stuff, and none of it works for us.

I'd much rather they bought books, but they want to buy toys. And since I have no idea what I'd buy DS, I need help !

Any great ideas ? Outdoor stuff would be good.

Outdoor trampoline - a small square one with a handle?

Couple of wooden railway trains/brio bits, these are small but cost a fortune!

SmugColditz · 15/04/2008 13:26

Wooden train track.

Iklboo · 15/04/2008 13:27

Adsa do a great wooden train set that fits with the other stuff and it's only £12. DS is 2.5 and he adores it.
With it being wooden it looks olde worlde & cool and your DH can help DS build the tracks & play with it

popsycal · 15/04/2008 13:29

agree - train track.

ds1 who is 5 and a half still enjoys playing with it....you can add to it for birthday/Christmas presents

What about something like this?.

This shop is in the town where I live and I can recommend them. They try to stock traditional toys and not much plastic tat.

We already have a mountain of brio track as my Dad is a boot sale fanatic and has latched onto that as something to buy.

Trampoline would be great if the only bit of level grass wasn't occupied by the slide/climbing thing, and presume not a good idea to put on paving ?

Scooter is a great idea - will try suggesting that.

Any others ?

Thank you all !

my mum got ds a trike from Halfords (think it was about £25 - the cheapest one)

bozza · 15/04/2008 14:15

Trike? Easel? They do a wooden easel at Ikea for about £13, but then you would need a roll of paper to go with it, add in some chalk, board rubber etc and you are at about £20.

From above link:

Go to outdoor kids and then children's rucksacks.

My parents have found some Brio construction kits - ds got the dumper truck quite early and has recently (3rd bday) got given some more advanced kits - he loves it, and there is a nice wooden truck to drive with things in the loader about as well.

HIJACK - did I see some magnetic lego-type bricks somewhere? Does anyone know what they are? DS doesn;t do well with duplo but loves his magnetic brio trians thought her might like the magnetic bricks.

scooters are good, but my lo is 3 and still wont go on his, what about a cheap sandpit?or a sand/water table, or a small ride on car for outside that he could play inside on too?
