Tummy tub ..... can you not just use a normal bucket?

apart from the fact it doesn't have an anti tip thing like the tummy tub does would an ordinary bucket work?

also i was watching this video and it seems to allow you to be quite hands free but is that the case for newborns? (the baby in the video was 2.5 months)

i have a pic of dd in the tummy tub 3 days after she was born. you can fill the water to the top marker for weight and 'dangle' them in by gently holding them with both hands beside the chin.

O what a lovely video, it feels like the little fella is looking straight at me. Brings tears to my eyes.

kiskideesameanoldmother · 12/04/2008 22:48

it is in my photos now.

the tub has gradations on the side of it that gives you a low water marker which is what the person in the video has used. with the low water marker, it bring the water level no higher than a baby's chest.

then the high level markers are graduations as if on measuring cup. only these markers correspond with body weights of babies. this way you can fill it up to a level that is safe for them to stand in.

dd loved her tub so much. it was an activity gym for her. she did very odd and amazing things in it. like at 4 months, with the deep setting, she could lift her body right out of the tup by resting her nape on the rim then bringing both legs out of the water and hooking her legs over the far side of the rim by the back of her knees.

i certainly never taught her how to do that.

she also used to 'jog' in motion long before she could stand using gravity.

they do sounds like a good idea. what age does it go up to?

dd is going to be 3 next week and still likes a good clamber in it now and then. she loves to fill it right to the top so that when she climbs in, it overflows. i can find a pic of her playing in it the other night if you want to see.

oh, it is good for colic apparently, because they 'swim' or rather doggie paddle in the water when it is deep, they pass wind, or more sometimes, and you have to take them out rapidito. dd did that a few times and bath came to a rapid end.

done

nappyaddict · 12/04/2008 23:30

is she not too squashed in it? beginning to think ds might like one. he can't be trusted in the bath at the moment cos he keeps standing up.

she wants to get into it! these days getting her into the bath has been a trial and some days i remind her of the TT and she agrees to get a bath. she is a bit squashed but I think that is all part of the fun for her. normally she only spends about 10 mins in the bath as she has eczema and does not use soap or bubble bath. poor child doesn't know what those things are. one day she may realise she's been deprived.

nappyaddict · 12/04/2008 23:37

ah right have tried the oilatum stuff and eucerin? ds has eczema but he can tolerate that.

i use aveeno all over after her bath (and with luck 2x a day)and hydrocortisone on any red spots or itchy spots.

these days little miss independent doesn't want baths, clothes, lotion or 'cream'. so her eczema is worse than at any time since she was a tiny baby and we found her routine.

i used to use epaderm in her bath as an emollient instead of soap. it seems to be good stuff.

her eczema has actually improved a lot though it looks worse now. we found out last november that she is allergic to egg and dairy. she was reacting to the egg in my milk. once i cut that out, it improved significantly but now that she runs away and fights when we try to put aveeno and hc on her, it looks all patchy.

kiskideesameanoldmother · 12/04/2008 23:45

using the TT meant that the epaderm wasn't coating the bath so it was a godsend.

nappyaddict · 12/04/2008 23:55

ds only has it mildly luckily. hopefully he will be like me and grow out of it although i do get the odd patch now and again.
