Do you have a bread maker? Which one? Would you recommend it? Do you use it regularly?

Thinking of getting one as I'm fed up with paying a fortune in the supermarket for a loaf of bread. We have bought the same brand for a long time now but the last couple I've bought haven't stayed fresh for long.
TIA

We have a Panasonic SD-255 and we love it . Gets used a lot and the bread tastes lovely.

Thanks Idris

Definitely the Panasonic! We have the SD252 & used it daily for the first 6 months. Now, it gets used 2 - 3 times per week. Waking up to the smell of freshly baked bread is incredibly addictive!

I nearly bought a breadmaker because I'm sick of the price of bread but I stopped myself as I thought about how I would cut it

I wouldn't be able to cut it to fit in the toaster, I was bound to hurt myself and get pissed off with not having 'ready to use' bread

how do you get round this?

saltcod · 12/04/2008 17:06

we have both on the go! I use processed bread for sandwiches but fresh bread to have with soup, soft boiled eggs, bread & butter etc You do need a decent bread knife, but I have no problem cutting slices to fit in the toaster!

Ambi · 12/04/2008 17:07

trinity - exactly the reason we don't use ours, need to find a decent bread slicer.

Twiglett · 12/04/2008 17:09

had mine 2 weeks .. same as Idris

must say it's not that great .. although I like the pizza dough and fruit bread and the bread tastes fine it's not that much superior to shop-bought

.. I'm actually eating less bread because I can't be arsed with the slicing and cleaning up as much tbh

I did get a bag from lakeland which is great at keeping it fresh though ..

also the measuring the ingredients seems to take a lot longer than I expected

overall I'd say we're using it (because we haven't bought bread in).. but not with relish

hairtwiddler · 12/04/2008 17:10

panasonic here too - recommend the one that has a seed tray because then you can make more varied breads.
We use it lots, but also keep a sliced loaf in the freezer for toast or when we run out.
If you make denser wholemeal loaves, you can learn to slice them thinly. The trick is to move the bread knife in a rapid sawing motion but not to move it a great deal backwards and forwards. I often cut one thick slice then half it for a sandwich or to toast.

castille · 12/04/2008 17:12

We've got a Moulinex. It's fine, not the best but it was free so we weren't complaining. When it dies we'll get a Panasonic.

We slice loaves with a bread knife. Where's the problem?

rnbsmum · 12/04/2008 17:35

Have had a Morphy Richards Fast Bake for 5 years and have used it constantly with no issues at all. Lovely bread, though I like it best when we use the dough setting and then bake in the oven as the loaves are a better size and shape IMO. Not expensive brand but has outlasted many of my friends fancy schmanzy ones!

Chocolateteapot · 12/04/2008 17:37

Panasonic, used daily (by DH).

foxythesnowfox · 12/04/2008 17:39

I have a Panasonic donated to me by a lovely MNer who left the UK

I use it every day, at least once.

Lidl do good bread flour.

I eat a lot less cake now!

Less salt in homemade loaves.

My DP doesn't like fresh bread. Wierdo.

susiemj · 12/04/2008 17:41

Panasonic. A slimline one. It's fabulous.

iamdingdong · 12/04/2008 17:46

we've had the panasonic 252 (I think) for about a year and a half now and use it all the time, it is DH's job (yes, it really is that easy to use ) but I agree about the hassle of slicing and clearing up crumbs, bit of a PITA but good quality bread

KatyMac · 12/04/2008 17:48

Kenwood
Used every day (sometmes twice)

I use an electric carving knife & can cut lovely thin slices (if I want, which I never do - except for sandwiches)

I want a lovely breadboard with a grill thingie so the crumbs catch underneath - but they are very expensive

tallbirduk · 12/04/2008 22:19

I've had a Panasonic for about 5 years and, apart from something like a french stick, haven't bought any bread since.

It takes about 2 minutes to load the ingredients, you get used to cutting it (don't try until it's cool and use a good serrated bread knife), you know exactly what's gone into it and it is FAR superior to most shop bought bread - if nothing else the texture is completely different, less mushy.

Brilliant bit of kit.

Renaissancewoman · 12/04/2008 22:22

I've got a Kenwood. Have not yet mastered bread; is always very heavy but I continue to perservere after 5 years!!. But sweetbreads (not as in testicles) are a delight, particularly apricot and cardomom, tea bread, banana bread and gingerbread.

MuddlingThru · 12/04/2008 22:53

I have had my Panasonic 253 (with the dispenser) for about a year. Probably use it 2 days out of 3. I got a food slicer to get round the whole cutting thing - it folds up so doesn't take up a huge amount of space on the worktop when not in use.

terramum · 12/04/2008 23:17

No breadmaker here...but making bread is really easy with my kenwood chef...and it does lots of other stuff too

SoMuchToBits · 12/04/2008 23:49

Don't have one, but my sister has Panasonic, and thinks it's great.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 12/04/2008 23:56

Panasonic - 252 or 254. It's excellent. We use it almost daily.

gigglewitch · 12/04/2008 23:59

morphy richards, v.straightforward to use and easy to clean

use it few times a week.
