Foot spas - gift or gaffe?

My partner can't believe that aged 14 (or so) I didn't buy a Clairol foot spa for my mum. A few months ago I mentioned this to her and she said they sounded lovely. I think she'd be very happy bubbling away of an evening and I'm keen to get her one for Christmas. But are they any good? Would love to hear any Mumsnet recommendations.

I did buy my Mum a foot spa when I was 14 - it got used for about 2 weeks and now resides in the loft. I think it depends on your Mums lifestyle - if she would normally spend her evenings sitting on the sofa anyway then go for it - if she can't sit still for more than 5 minutes it's probably not such a good idea!

Well, does she sit with her feet in a bowl of water anyway? If not, I'd give it a swerve.

I don't mean with her feet in a bowl ALL the time

Like Prufrock, I used mine a lot for a few weeks, and now it's gathering dust somewhere. just found it a bit cumbersome to fill up and transport to lounge (near a plug) - water slops around a bit. I probably overfilled it tho', as the 'fill' marker on the side was way to low for my liking - like my feet totally submerged!
Was lovely when up and running, but a bit of a gimmick I think...

I borrowed my sister's when pg. last time(she wasn't using it). I used it once. I think they are a nice idea but once I'm tired enough to sit down and use one I cannot be bothered to fill it up.

agree with lollypop. I borrowed one recently following surgery on both feet. Nice enough but just too much faff. Used it once.

prufrock · 10/12/2002 20:02

Of course if your Mum can persuade your Dad to do the filling and carying.....

I'd use one if it came with a free gorgeous young man to tend me while I rested (Will Kemp springs to mind).

There are some dashed fine points here. And although she doesn't sit with her feet in a bowl of water all the time Tinker, she has amassed quite a bit of comfort-based paraphenalia over the last few years, special cushions, pain relieving hot pads and the like. She doesn't seem to mind a bit of faff for a nice long 'aaaaahhhh' moment. Anyway, I bought one. I saw it today in Woolworths and I've tried it tonight. I've had worse 20 minutes that's for sure, but I've bought more inspiring presents too.....Do I HAVE to lug it back to the shop?
