i wonder how they have surmised that UK parents don't want this product

I did it because i had a talk by a road safety officer which scared the crap out of me

There are RAF planes that are rear facing. Safest way to travel!

LIZS · 07/04/2008 19:15

It's one of those "milestones" some parents seem in an indecent and competitive rush to achieve, whether their child is really ready or not. Fortunately relatively few have to learn the hard way. Presumably the larger rear facing seats haven't been tested to the BS.

you coudl have novelty pictures ont eh abck of the signs for cars on the other side o the raod.

OP posts:
Hulababy · 07/04/2008 19:23

Makes sense doesn't it? But you must need much larger cars - those car seats are much further back on the seat (sticking out towards the front of car) than our stage 1 and 2 car seats - I don't think I could have one behind my seat wth a 4 year old in, and DH certainly couodn't.

But I can see this coming in eventually. esp as so much safer. It just means we will have to be more prepared to buy and use bigger cars I guess, but if child is safer n way round it.

AitchTwoOh · 07/04/2008 19:30

i kept poor dd scrunched up in her rear-facing car seat until she was well over one for this reason. it just doesn't make sense that they are safer going forward, never has.

Bridie3 · 07/04/2008 19:38

Hmmn. More bigger cars on the road could mean more children killed if they're hit because bigger cars are heavier. I also think people drive more sensibly in smaller cars because they feel more vulnerable themselves.

misdee · 07/04/2008 19:45

it makes sense. and if that nordic fixway can be used from birth-4 rearfacing, then i will get one. i'll be spending £170 on an isofix car seat anyway for dc#4, so might as well get one seat for less than the price of two different stage seats.

TheBlonde · 07/04/2008 19:49

looks like the nordic fixway is isofix only - no seatbelt option so a bit less flexible

DD is in a US Britax seat which can be rearfacing up to 35lbs

MrsAki · 07/04/2008 21:08

All rear facing seats sold in Sweden are ECE approved and are thus approved for the UK as well. There is no BS standard for car seats. The ECE standard is an international standard upheld by the UN.

There are currently 1 million rear facing car seats in use in Sweden, but not everyone in Sweden has huge cars. There are all sorts. Nissan Micra, Honda Jazz, you name it, they use it, but they can all fit rear facing seats. The issue here is bigger than "it will not fit in my car". If they were made standard the manufacturers would have to make sure that they did fit in all cars. Just like they have in Sweden.

The real issue is why this has been kept from British parents for so long. How can car seat manufacturers justify statements such as "British parents don't want them"? Who are they to say what we want and don't want when it comes to our children's safety? I find it insulting. All parents I know strive to always provide the safest possible products for their children.

misdee · 07/04/2008 21:11

mrsAki, have found a thread on babyworld, but seeing as you are hear now, you might be able to help.

am expecting dc#4, is there a seat that is birth-4 at all?

SlightlyMadSweet · 07/04/2008 21:15

Feeling smug at having a 2yo DD small enough to still fit in her rearward facing seat.

suwoo · 07/04/2008 21:20

It says they must weigh 55lbs to face forward. DD is 6 and only weighs 34lbs. What would she do, scrunch up for the next 2 years?

MrsAki · 07/04/2008 21:56

There are plenty of birth to 18 or 25 kg seats available, but not so readily available in the UK as I would wish ... BeSafe Izi Kid for instance, or Britax Fixways (isofix to boot).

As regards legs getting bent (I was wondering how long it would take before that came up), rear facing stage 1 seats are not like infant seats. They are higher up and further away from the back seat, with more leg room (the edge of the seat does not touch the back seat). The child can easily see out the side window (or back window for that matter). Also, I would rather have a child sitting with bent legs than having a child with a broken neck. To be a bit OTT and dramatic

blithedance · 07/04/2008 22:06

Interesting - I have just taken Britax Club Class out of car as DS2 although way light, is too tall for shoulder straps. He oculd technically still go rear facing in it (2.6 yr old & 11kg) but it will not go safely in any seat of the Passat when rear facing, as it is HUUGE.

sushistar · 07/04/2008 22:10

Re bigger cars - glad you don't need them for these seats. Stupid to have to choose between risking the broken neck now and the death-by-global-warning that could reslt from all those extra people carriers...

MrsAki · 07/04/2008 22:13

Could not agree with you more. Global warming is not a nice legacy at all.

misdee · 07/04/2008 22:26

well i'm not too far from the MK safety centre, so will pop up there closer to due-date and get a seat fitted.

all 3dd's are now over 18kg i think, (bad mummy, i dont get them weighed), so they are ok in their current seats.
