Can anyone help, where is the cheapest place to buy this?

Can I get it cheaper than £6.09 - Tesco, Boots, Asda all charge this price.

Thanks!

I believe it is cheaper from the local community health centres, as it is subsidised.

I don't think supermarkets etc are allowed to give special offers on formula milk, as they are not meant to encourage formula feeding over breast. (I think this may be an EU directive??) So probably everywhere charges the same price. (Don't know about the community health centres.)

I thought it was cheaper at community health centers but I'm not sure if you need tokens for it. My ex-local one had a sign up saying they no longer sold milk but they still gave it in return for tokens.

I have definitely seen follow on milks on special offer in Tescos but as they are 6mths + they are not, I believe, viewed as a breast milk substitute. I have a niggling feeling that I have seen baby formula on offer but would imagine that this must be a manufacturers offer, not the supermarket/chemist. Certainly all the money off vouchers Tesco club card send out have "excludes infant formula" printed on them.

My HV advised me to get it from the local baby clinic as she said it was maybe £2 cheaper - I don't know if it was as I never went !

clucks · 09/12/2002 13:36

Don't think it's as much as 2 pounds cheaper. I got it from the clinic a couple of times and got 60 p off I think, also they gave me a couple of dented tins free because they were not allowed to sell them as damaged, but I was too scared to use them.

Perhaps the discount depends on the area that you live in, or maybe our HV was just totally wrong!!

The BigW (Woolworths outlet) has it cheaper, or from your doctors/baby clinic.

There is uk legislation which enforces price fixing on formula - the The Infant Formula and Follow-on Formula Regulations 1995 which says (amongst other things):

Restrictions on promotion of infant formulae

No person shall at any place where infant formula is sold by retail -
(a) advertise any infant formula;
(b) make any special display of an infant formula designed to promote sales;
(c) give away -
(i) any infant formula as a free sample; or
(ii) any coupon which may be used to purchase an infant formula at a discount;
(d) promote the sale of an infant formula by means of premiums, special sales, loss-leaders or tie-in sales; or
(e) undertake any other promotional activity to induce the sale of an infant formula.

No manufacturer or distributor of any infant formula shall provide for promotional purposes any infant formula free or at a reduced or discounted price, or any gift designed to promote the sale of an infant formula, to -
(a) the general public;
(b) pregnant women;
(c) mothers; or
(d) members of the families of persons mentioned in sub-paragraphs (b) and (c) above, either directly, or indirectly through the health care system or health workers.

So you should actually be surprised if the price vary from shop to shop.

In fact, if you see it marked down as damaged tins etc, you should report this to your local trading standards office who will take necessary action as this is definately illegal. Follow on milks are not covered by this legislation though.
