Bed guards for a wooden bed with slatted base and sunken mattress

I need to find a bed guard for a wooden sleigh bed. Mattress is sunken into the frame so there is about 4 inches of wood above the top of the base that runs along the side of the mattress iykwim. Base is slatted with narrow slats, any ideas?

I think the tomy one will work (though may say on the box that it won't!). You just have to "squidge" it between the mattress and the wood bit. Might depend on how squidgy the mattress is.

could you buy from somewhere lovely like John Lewis and take it back if it doesn't fit?

Tutter · 05/04/2008 21:30

i know exactly what you mean, and no, the tomy one doesn't work

in the end we bnought a mothercare one (wooden) and took it apart so we could then screw the side panel onto the bed frame

i spent ages trying to find a guard that would fit, and even called the people who we bought the cotbed from, but to no avail...

Is it a cot bed? Because they often have drill holes in the side for a bedguard. Any guard from the same manufacturer as the bed should fit...

we used the tomy one successfully with a wooden bed frame with slatted base, but our sides were nowhere near as deep as yours (not that I can see that'd make a difference as rail was, as I say, squidged in).

I wonder whether the Ikea bed guard would work - it fits onto the side of the bed, rather than under the mattress, and just has kind of rubber feet, a bit like a big peg. I'll see if they still do it.

Tutter · 05/04/2008 21:33

when we tried the tomy one, the plastic housings for the hinges (the big circular bits on the 'elbow') were too big to fit between bedframe and mattress

The best option I've found was the Babydan folding bedguard. It's not perfect, and doesn't drop well, so we leave it up permanently, but it works.

With all the bedguards we have tried, the design is for the hinge to sit at the edge of the mattress - as I'm sure you've found out - which works perfectly for a divan base, but not for a slatted base. You have to squash the hinge into the base, so that it still sits at the edge of the mattress. So basically you need to find a bedguard with a slim hinge and where the safety catch release mechanism doesn't get caught on the mattress.

This is the Ikea one

Washersaurus · 05/04/2008 21:35

Would an Ikea wooden one work?

Washersaurus · 05/04/2008 21:36

Oooh I'm slooooow

forkhandles · 05/04/2008 21:36

we've also used the Tomy one on a bed with sunken mattress and slatted base. It is squidged in and does sit slightly on top of the frame but works no problems.

Tutter · 05/04/2008 21:36

wish i'd known about the ikea one - looks perfect

I got all distracted by eating my bar of fruit and nut and drinking my glass of wine whilst I posted

WendyWeber · 05/04/2008 21:40

We used to use one with feet in a slatted bed, and set the feet at a 45 degree angle across the slats under the mattress - could you do that in a sleigh bed?

MegBusset · 05/04/2008 21:43

Ours is similar, the Babydan bed rail fits it although you can't fold it down.

Lennied · 05/04/2008 21:49

Wow! Thank you... will start looking at all these.... mmmm fruit and nut....

It is a proper bed rather than a cot bed, and was fairly expensive, don't want to hurt it

Does the Ikea one fold down?

OP posts:
JackieNo · 05/04/2008 21:54

No - it doesn't fold down. But comes off fairly easily (for an adult).

missymum · 06/04/2008 21:47

LenniEd · 06/04/2008 22:52
