HAs anybody had a session with Venture photography?

We won a prize draw for a session with them. It is tomorow and I am wondering if anyone else has done one.

Our voucher is for the session and for one photo (total cost supposedly £125). But I have my doubts now as to how legitimate the prize draw was as I saw them advertising these vouchers to give people at christmas for only £25. When I filled out the prize draw form I mentioned that we were interessed in a photo of the kids for a large space on our wall and I suspect they gave us the voucher as we were a good bet to buy something.

Anyway, has anyone experienced this company? Are we in for a hard sell tomorow? And how expensive are their photos to buy? I am guessing very expensive!

Thanks!

I have to disagree with some of you here, as I think that Venture is an outrageous rip off. The £25 for a session ("discounted from £125") plus 1 photo is a standard offer they run all yr round, under various names to suit the season - Mother's Day, Father's Day, Christmas, etc.

My friend also "won" one of the prize draws. She later told me they'd taken her post code (she lives in a wealthy area) on the application form, and she thought they selected on that basis. If they do, it's a good scheme, as she ended up paying about £1600 for some pictures! (she got 1 of the 9 shot big pictures, and 1 3 shot one).

We did a session with them and when I realised how much they charged for the photos, I said I wasn't interested in buying any. I was still getting calls from them 6 months later, trying to get me to "reconsider". I kept telling them we simply couldn't afford £250 for a photo, but they just wouldn't get the message.

I think if they would sell the images unframed, they might do a lot more business, but the prices they charge as it is are just outrageous.

Although I felt sad at the time that we couldn't afford to get any more pictures, I'm glad now, as several of my friends have had their children done, and the pictures are in such a distinctive style that it's a bit like a dress from Boden or Monsoon - perfectly nice, until you realise that everyone knows where you got it, and quite a few people have got something very similar! For that sort of money I'd want something a bit more personal.

I've been looking around locally and have found 2 or 3 really well-recommended photgraphers who will come to your house, or the location of your choice (favourite park, duck pond, whatever) and take lots of pics of your children, and the prices they charge for the finished product are a lot more reasonable, for a much more individual result. When we've saved up a bit, I think that's what we'll do.

Misdee I think you were a little naive ( not one fo n your normal characteristics!) of course they " let" you cancel it as you wodulnt buy photos fo a kid with a shiner wodul you?!!

codswallop · 01/01/2005 14:33

think someone should e mail this to them

WigWamBam · 01/01/2005 15:24

Great idea, Coddy ... although my experience of them suggests that they'd ignore it anyway.

AuntyQuated · 01/01/2005 15:35

and the other previous threads...i can't believe you bought one coddy [pgrin]

AuntyQuated · 01/01/2005 15:36

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 01/01/2005 15:57

I'm sure Beetroot once said on a previous Venture thread that she's a photograper and "is willing to travel..."

Tinker · 01/01/2005 16:08

Here's another thead about them

TeaTime · 01/01/2005 16:21

So glad I stumbled on this thread as I was considering a Venture session for ds' third birthday in March. Got the Olan Mills 'Watch Me Grow' offer when he was born (a session with a 'free' photo every three months for a year for about £30) but always ended up getting a lot more than the free photo - which is what they bank on. However never spent more than £100 and the pictures were great. However had some annoying experiences (turning up for a session a few minutes late due to traffic problems in Coventry and being told it had gone to someone else and they couldn't fit me in that day) and so have stopped going there. The Venture pictures look different but I didn't realise they cost that much... I'll look in to something more local I think.

codswallop · 01/01/2005 16:52

I know
now feel hoodwinked altho photo is great
it in our room
9 shots of the boys and us
mostly doing sporty things ( them not me)

misdee · 01/01/2005 17:39

Maybe i am niave, but at the end of the day they could've just taken our deposit and not rebooked without charging us again.

Carla · 01/01/2005 18:28

Beety, are you?

IlanaK · 02/01/2005 11:53

Well, we just got back from our session. My 3 year old loved it. He had a great time because the photographer asked him to do all the things he loves best - running, jumping throwing balls, screaming etc. My 6 month old was not that interested one way or another. I have to say that I was not impressed with their preparation for photographing a 6 month old event hough they knew his age before we came. The room was totally freezing. We all had to go barefoot and I think we would have got frostbite if we had stayed any longer. There was nothing to lay my 6 month old on - just a bare wooden floor. I had asked for a shot of him with just a terry nappy on - which was fine except he was turning blue!

They did try to insist that we came back without children - which I told them was not going to happen. They also said that viewings were weekdays only before 6pm - also not going to happen as my dh works! Anyway, our viewing is in 2 weeks time - we will see what that is like.

Codswallop - if you don't mind me asking how much was the 9 shot photo? More than £500? More than £1000?

lulupop · 02/01/2005 13:18

think a 9-shot is about £750

blueteddy · 02/01/2005 13:46

A collection of 4 is £700!
I think the collection of 9 is the best part of a grand!!!

misdee · 02/01/2005 14:02

did they give u a price list?

what studio did u go to? was nice and warm when we went, but was summertime. maybe they should put some fan heaters about the place.

IlanaK · 02/01/2005 18:42

We went to the one in Primrose Hill.

They did give me a price list and I laughed when I saw the price for one I was admiringon the wall in a sort of double mount frame. Prices for that range STARTED at 1195!!!!!

OP posts:
codswallop · 02/01/2005 18:44

yes think about 750 to 800
gulp!
dont knwo what we were thinking of

blueteddy · 02/01/2005 18:50

When I went for my viewing, they told me that they were doing a special offer of a collection of 4 for the same price as a collection of 3, which was £695!
How very generous of them!!!

kangasantamummy · 02/01/2005 19:08

I realise this may be a silly question but why are you paying so much money for a photograph?

Surely it depends on the photographer?

Why are they much better than a local photographer?

Who may have more time to give you and be more flexible

We had a studio session with DS when he was a baby with a local photographer we only paid for the photos we wanted which as they were so georgeous we quite a few.

But he gave us as much time as we wanted and was brill and friendly

This was in East sussex so maybe cheaper than Chelsea or other posh london addresses. but if these were all taken out of posh london then why??????

Just curious and nosey really?

kangasantamummy · 02/01/2005 19:11

What I mean is it depends how good the phtographer is doesn't it?

blueteddy · 02/01/2005 19:32

It is a chain & there are venture studios all over the country.
The pictures are very modern & are framed lovely, but still very over priced imo.
The studio I went to did not go out of there way to please their customers either. It is like they think their pictures are so good that they don't need to.
After my awfull experience with them I will never use them again

Slinky · 02/01/2005 20:01

Like Kanga, we've used a local photographer for the last 9 years after an awful photo shoot with one of these "chain companies" (can't remember the name now).

The photographer we use is a "husband and wife" team - he takes the pictures, she makes the kids laugh and they are both fab. We don't pay for any studio fees, just for the actual pictures we want - which are NOTHING like some of the prices mentioned here!.

When DD2 was 5 months old, he took a lovely picture (part of the Watch Me Grow scheme) and he enlarged it to use in his shop window. When he was finished with it, he GAVE it to me - refused any money for it, so I gave a donation to his chosen charity.

They are a lovely couple (due to retire soon I should think). I wouldn't touch another Photography chain ever - a friend of mine had several bad experiences with Olan Mills (and passed my details onto them - not happy!).

blueteddy · 02/01/2005 22:03

A few of my friends have had bad experiences with venture as well.
1 had to wait ages for her picture & when they finally got it, it was scratched!
Another friends picture was in the wrong frame (they had spent £700 on it!)
And my other friend requested a black & white picture & was presented with a colour one!
