car breakdown cover - has anyone bought from the cheap deals on the internet and was it ok?

just needing to renew out car breakdown cover and it was with directline before, for the top package it was about £110 a year i think, the AA being about £150. But for the same level of cover there are companies on moneysupermarket.com doing the same deal for £30 a year - just not sure whether to trust them or not?! Any advice welcome, ta.

i think its just because of the fact they are well established.
also look into:
whether its you or the car thats covered.
its much cheaper to cover the car and if you dont often travel in another car its much better value.
whereas if its you who is covered it doesnt matter who's car you are in they will cover you(useful if you dont have a permanent car or travel often as a passenger)

i have my car covered,as with having 2 car seats in i dont ever travel in anyone elses car.so thats the best option for me.

I had one of those cheap ones last year (forget what it was called but was recommended by money-saving Martin) - never needed to call them out but was a bit concerned that we weren't covered if we ran out of petrol - I know that would be a really stupid thing to do but it wouldn't necessarily stop me doing it )

This year we have Tesco's own, which was a pretty good price (will check in a min); the best deal though is if you have lots of Clubcard vouchers, then you can get RAC for about £30

Tesco total cover £55 atm

It's with Green Flag who are pretty good on the whole but looks like you have to sign up by Wednesday.

yep thing is,where i live (the middle of nowhere) there are no AA trucks, they use local garages depending on where you are when you break down.the cheaper breakdown services are the same.
so in effect two people broken down on the same stretch of road, one with AA one with cheap company, the same local garage would be called out by both companies!

I have Tesco, but they still haven't sent me out any documents. Will need to ring them I guess!

fairylights · 01/04/2008 13:47

that tesco deal looks great, thanks! And i kind of feel i could trust them seeing as they are a "known" company..need to renew asap anyway so the deal suits me.
cheers!

I had a free thing through my barclays bank. Broke down night before Good Friday and discovered that I was only covered to be towed 10 miles. Then felt sorry for me and thankfully took me 36 miles home.

But they ran their policy through RAC, who in turn subcontracted it to a lovely local firm. THe bloke that picked us up was absolutely lovely and recommended we go use RAC over AA - and this is from an impartial person.

Don't know costs, but this was all based on service i received at 1opm on a Thursday night next to the M4!

I transferred from AA to Directline a couple of years back-however I transferred back last year as when I broke down all Directline do is tow you to nearest garage whilst AA have proper mechanics.

sazm · 01/04/2008 17:17

theres so many different types of cover, you really need to decide exactly what cover you want and then shop around.
my mum was with the AA and both times she used them the service was A+++++ really good.

a guy who was with RAC broke down and used the phone at my work,it took them nearly 4 hours to come out to him, even though there was him,his wife,2 toddlers and a young baby in the car.that REALLY put me off them,

Check the underwriter. Ask friends who have these what their expeirience was and READ THE SMALL PRINT. My boyfriend recently found out his cheap ASDA deal does not cover him for half the things he assumed would be basics.

I have been with Direct Line for years now and have had excellent service. My car has had to be written off twice (old car, neither time my fault... break-in and taxi drove into me). They payed out promptly, their legal team gave me fantastic support in the taxi case.
