Ceramic hob, yes or no?

Our gas hob is broken and we need to replace it. I am not a good housewife and so I am tempted to have something that is easier to keep clean. I do like to cook though. Will I be able to put my le crueset on one? Someone else thought they look scratched after a bit too - is that right?

I loved my ceramic hob, now have gas, don't like it!!!

chopchopbusybusy · 26/03/2008 12:18

If you already have gas I'd replace it with gas - it's easier to use. I do currently have a ceramic hob - looks good, easy to clean and not scratched - it is 11 years old.

crumpet · 26/03/2008 12:18

No. Go with Induction - as quick (if not quicker) as gas and no nonsense to clean.

oggsfrog · 26/03/2008 12:21

You can use Le Creuset on ceramic hobs.
My Mum got one last year and thinks it's wonderful. It has touch sensitive controls actually on the hob too which makes cleaning even easier. You do have to be careful not to spill sugar or salt on them, and lift pans on and off rather than dragging. Good Housekeeping review

Actually, I'm wondering whether it is a ceramic or induction hob. What is the difference? [not much use after all emoticon] .

Berrie · 26/03/2008 12:42

Yeah me to...what is an induction?

OP posts:
crumpet · 26/03/2008 12:48

To be honest I'd need to look it up - there is some magnetic "thing" which makes it work how it does..... All I can tell you is that we have induction and it is (a) faster than gas or ceramic to heat up (b) has heavy useage and looks as good as new 8 months on and (c) is a doddle to clean.

The only thing to be aware of is that only pans which a magnet will stick to will work with induction hobs

Berrie · 26/03/2008 13:50

Are the pans expensive?

OP posts:
crumpet · 26/03/2008 13:57

I don't think they have to be - cast iron or stainless steel I think. Not aluminium. A lot of price tags will say whether or not they are suitable for induction. My parents just went to TK Maxx with a magnet!

my sis has just went to gas from a ceramic and she hates it,
my other sister has went from solid electric hob to ceramic and couldnt be happier,my mum also has changed from ceramic to gas and doesnt like it.
i can't wait til i have the money to get a ceramic hob,
its SO easy to clean,my mum used to buy special stuff from tesco to clean it and it always came up great

expatinscotland · 26/03/2008 16:03

NO.

we have one. it's a rental home so we can't change it.

we both hate it.

gas all the way!

saltcod · 26/03/2008 16:13

Ceramic hobs not that easy to clean - have to scrub really hard with special ceramic hob cleaner, so more effort than cleaning a gas hob. Plus your saucepans have a tendancy to slip & slide around - can be very dangerous. Much prefer my gas hob

HappyMummyOfOne · 26/03/2008 16:17

I really wanted one in our old house when we replaced the kitchen and went for one - regretted it as within a few weeks it had marked and was awful to get clean and marked so easily.

Plus, if you have a powercut and both hob and oven are electric you're up the creek when trying to make a drink / warm water for a babies bottle.

Just adding my no to everyone else's. Ceramic hobs are a total PITA and I HATE mine.

Berrie · 26/03/2008 19:10

Well that told me!
Thanks everyone!
Bad news is that I smelt gas even after dh disconected the hob so maybe its the boiler which is altogether more expensive Better call a plumber

I prefer Gas, but we have no Gas in our present kitchen, and had a ceramic hob in place. The Halogen rings are very good, and with a hob cleaner it does still look nice (and is over 10 years old).
