BT broadband - anyone else having problems? Can you recommend me another ISP? I am fed up.

I have been having problems with BT broadband since March 12th. I have been emailling with their customer service and their comments and suggestions have been getting increasingly unhelpful.

Basically, they are stopping you from using email addresses other than your BT address. I have several other emails - a personal one, one for work, two or three for my charity, one for my husband, etc. and until now they have all worked OK. Now, BT say that you can't have them or that you have to verify them. Well, I've tried to verify mine, and the BT system actually thinks it's a verified address, but I'm still getting the same problems and error messages. The "help" line seems unable to understand me and in its last two emails seems to be telling me - not even particularly politely - to just put up with it.

I've had enough

I pay nearly £40 a month for their rubbish service. Only recently I realised that many family and friends pay less than half this for sometimes faster speeds and none of these problems. So as soon as my contract is up - or maybe sooner - I'm leaving them.

Can anyone recommend me a good ISP. My line only supports up to 2Mbps, so speed is not a huge issue, but I do need unlimited usage, or a high level of usage.

I don't really want all in one phone packages andd so on, just broadband that works well, without many outages, and which has webmail would be good.

Telewest (or Virgin Media as it is currently known). I have never had a problem with my broadband service.

Cappuccino · 26/03/2008 09:15

you need googlemail

I receive all my different emails in the same googlemail account

it's a net-based system so it shouldn't have to bother your bt people - I have BT broadband and I still get my googlemail and work email addresses without any problem

you set it up and then you go to settings and go to 'add addresses' and you just have to reply to a confirmation and it sorts ther est

you can send mails with your different email address names too

I have BT braodband and use multiple other email addresses. They are mostly gmail addresses, but not all of them. I have no problems receiving them all into my inbox of outlook express.

However, we are changing to Sky broadband. I have no problems with BT at all except their price. I can get a better download from Sky for £5 a month and I am paying £21 to BT. I know Sky customer service is not as good, but I can't ignore the price difference!

Ledodgy · 26/03/2008 09:22

I thought 02 was BT?

I like the idea of Googlemail, but prefer to keep all my emails within Outlook. Does Googlemail work with Outlook do you know? Or would I have the same problems I have now?

IlanaK - not everyone on BT seems to be having these problems, it seems. And for many, they can resolve them with this verification process. But for me it just isn't working and I can't get to speak to a real person at BT to explain this, and hte people I am emailing at the help centre just don't (or don't want to) understand that I don't fit into their scripted answers.

I don't use outlook tbh because googlemail has so much space and it's filing systems are really good

but as far as I know I think it might work iwth outlook

just go on and have a play; you can always junk it if it doesn't work

I really like it- I like the fact that it saves 'conversations' so if you are replying back and forth to the same email it saves it all as one

I just think it is the best thing EVER - I am a freelance with various email identities for different jobs and it is fantastic for me

Sky is free? I have Sky. Will look at their website later.

I'm off out for the day but will check back in later for any other recommendations. I think I will be busy researching them all this evening!

Thanks all.

I have free sky broadband too, and it's been great so far..........

PABLOP · 26/03/2008 09:48

Virgnmedia, I have never had a problem

saltcod · 26/03/2008 16:01

O2 has best customer service rating on moneysupermarket.com & if I can ever get the tags taken off my line, that's who I will sign up with. You get a big discount if you have a mobile with them too.

BT/Orange have stuffed up my broadband line,so I've been without it since Decemeber - avoid them both like the plague

sazm · 26/03/2008 16:18

i had bt a long time ago and HATED it.
i have now had aol for the last 5 yrs and NEVER had any problems at all with them, great service, really easy to use,

Troutpout · 26/03/2008 16:25

another vote for AOL here

PABLOP · 26/03/2008 16:28

Isn't AOL expensive?

Troutpout · 26/03/2008 16:36

Atm they have an offer that is 9.99 for the first 6 months and then 14.99 thereafter.
we pay about 19.99 a month for our service

Nymphadora · 26/03/2008 16:38

Post Office are good, only had them 2 months though.

DON'T do Tiscali, just reported their customer service to OFCOM.

sazm · 26/03/2008 16:49

aol is £14.99( we pay an extra £1.99 for anti-virus too) a month for the one we are on. if you do the one thats £19.99 a month you get the free laptop deal,

paddingtonbear1 · 26/03/2008 17:06

I heard the ones to avoid were orange and aol - someone who had aol said they basically took over the PC and they had lots of trouble getting rid. orange has lots of problems and bad customer service. A friend of my dad's has talk talk, they seem to have good deals. we have virgin, not the cheapest but v reliable!

paddingtonbear1 · 26/03/2008 17:08

.. but you guys have had no trouble with your aol? I deffo think orange are bad though, my boss has had no end of trouble with them!

cluckyagain · 26/03/2008 17:09

Pipex are good - we get everything - calls, BT line, broadband for £29.99 a month - they have really great customer and tech service too - don't make you feel like an utter plonker wehn you ring in confusion!

Troutpout · 26/03/2008 20:44

Been with Aol for 7 years..never had a problem

sazm · 26/03/2008 23:03

yep my sister,mum,mother-in-law,dad-in-law,aunt,and cousins are all with aol,and have been for at least 4 yrs. no problems at all,
