Travertine bathroom basins - are they practical and what are the alternatives (not porcelain) ?

We currently have a bog standard porcelain basin in our ensuite but because DH and I have titanium wedding rings the basin is scratched all around the left hand side of the rim. I need to replace it with something that will not scratch as DH will forget to take his wedding ring off everytime he uses the basin if I replace it with another porcelain one.

I like the look of the travertine ones (obviously they are honed and filled), but I wonder how easy they are to clean and how durable they are when it comes to beign used with shaving foam, toothpaste and mouthwash etc. I suppose that is a daft question as stone is very hardwearing and if it is a basin then it must be able to cope with all that stuff, but I don't want to shell out a shedload of money (taps, overflow and wastes etc are all extra) and find that it is a just as much of a waste of time as the bloody porcelain ones.

What are the other non-scratch alternatives ?
