Saucepans that will:-

a) last, (ie not burn every sauce you try to make) for several years

b) look good for several years

c) not cost a fortune

Having bought saucepans for more years than I care to mention I want to get some that don't look knackered when they've been in the dishwasher, don't burn any sauces. I've got some stainless steel, and some with non-stick lining and they are all rubbish. They look awful and must go.

Cast iron may be too heavy as I have arthritis in my hands but am open to suggestions.

we have these and like them but we don't put them in the dishwasher (enough to knacker any pan ime)

John Lewis have stainless steel heavy-bottomed pans in the Jonelle range. They are heavier than cheap pans but nowhere near cast iron weight. Mine are about 10 years old now and look absolutely fine, and they've been used mostly on an aga so get used at very high temperatures.

They weren't expensive compared to copper or cast iron pans but they're not £30 for an entire set either.

And if you stir your sauces and don't slope off to MN, then you won't burn anything!

John Lewis 'Classic' Saucepans. From £29 each.

Thank you, am duly reprimanded for my saucepan ruining habits.

I have excema on my hands so try to avoid washing up but will buy good non-allergic gloves and attempt not to spoil any more.

My nan had her pans for about 50 years and I'm trying to be more like her than the reckless spender I have been.

Cheers EM

Another vote for the John Lewis pans in the link below. I've had mine for almost 15 yrs and they still look good as new. I always wash them in the dishwasher, and I cook a lot. Excellent value for money and a great choice in the range.

I also have one Tefal non-stick big wok type frying pan for occasions when I really need non-stick! It's good, but I'm on my 2nd one...

Fourthing the John Lewis Classics. We got a set in 2005 and I still love them. Thick bases with copper in so even heat, still look fab, and you can just bung in the dishwasher.

I love my Stellar 1000 pans. They're beautiful mirror polished stainless steel, dishwasher proof and heavy based. I've had mine for 12 years and they're still going stong. DH does not know why I love my pans so much but HE doesn't cook!

I agree with The Duchy, always keep stirring and you shouldn't have burning issues.
