I have the wooden one from John Lewis (made by east coast)

Many double as a travel cot. We had a Graco one - used it a fair bit for ds while I ironed etc (he could cruise around) , less for dd (took it as a bed on holiday a few times).

BabyDan - can be used as fence and you can get a tent bit to make it to a den when they get older. Also good second hand/ebay value.

I don't think I've ever met anyone who has used a playpen unless it is to keep a younger baby out of the way of rampaging toddlers.

Do you really think you'll need one?

A travel cot can double as a safe place to pop a baby down .. or you could put a stairgate on your living room and make the whole room a play area (which was what we did)

Really think they're one of those things that has limited / no use for a first-time parent tbh

I used a Graco travel cot for DD2 to keep her safe from DD1 put a baby gym under it and she could lie under there whilst I got things done.

Only lasted about 6 months though once she was able to move she wanted out and would howl when in it.

I agree completely with Twiglett they are of limited use better to baby proof one room and let them go.

I had a wooden one I got in a 2nd hand baby shop (they didn't sell 2nd hand babies...) My Mum said I needed it. I couldn't put ds1 in it because he would scream blue murder; I occasionally put ds2 in it when I needed to go to the loo (he screamed blue murder too but I didn't care so much by then); sometimes I sat in it with a magazine for a bit of peace and quiet; and it made a good place to chuck all the toys at the end of the day. Unless you've got plenty of space for it I really wouldn't bother.

We had a Babydan and it was a godsend, so much so that my friend bought one too. Her child hated it and refused to go in, dd would take herself into it much to her annoyance. But be warned in case yours is one who doesn't like it.
