I like the wooden trainsets - get cheap track from say Tesco/Asda then buy the Thomas characters to go with it. Can be added to too - eg buy bridges/tunnels etc, again not necessarily Thomas ones.

we dont have take along thomas (although it looks great) but we have a wooden trainset, and its been the best thing ever.my son got it 2 christmasses ago and its still played with all the time.
we add bits to it each time we go to tesco, lol,so he has a fair bit now.

My DS has take along thomas, and they have proved to be a favourite for a long time. He is 3 and is able to connect the plastic track quite easily himself now. The trains themselves are diecast metal, I have noticed a few tiny chips in the paintwork of his favourites. Believe me, these have taken a serious pounding though (dropped downstairs etc) and we have had no breakages.

They are quite dear I suppose, from £4.99 upwards. There are loads of accessories to go with the set now, we find amazon is good for a big selection as many of the stores only seem to stock the "popular" engines. I would recommend.

My DS (3.10) had the take along Thomas "Tidmouth Sheds" and a selection of engines for Christmas. He has played with it every day since then as have all the children who have come to our house to play -I would def. recommend it.

The trains are fab, robust, and connect well. Yes, they are pricy, but the wooden ones are even more so.

We only have the old style track, which does have drawbacks, there is only one shape junction track, which limits what is built. Don't know what the new style stuff is like.

A friend has the woodedn track, mostly tesco stuff (they do fab bridges) but sadly it is not compatable with the take-along stuff. The wooden track is better if you have a budding civil engineer.

We have both a wooden set and the blue plastic thomas rail set. The wooden one is lovely and the blue one sits unused in a tub despite paying over £100 for the track and various trains.
