Do Isofix seats for newborns (ie rearfacing) press into the drivers/front seat more than a normal belted 0+ seat?

Sorry Im a complete novice re Isofix. I understand that the seat just clips into a fixed base thingy which in turn is fixed onto the Isofix hook in your car. Presumably that slightly restricts the other kids getting into the car (as some have a rod that goes down to the floor? am I imagining that?) and it sticks out more horizontally (or not). Is it because Im pregnant. I am totally incapable of making any decisions about anything!! Tell me about your great stage 0+ isofix seat an how easy it is!!!

They don't press into the drivers side any more that other car seats - obvously the ones with a bit that goes down are a bit more in the way if another child has to climb across them, but they are just sooo easy to use, and much, much more rigid than using a seat belt that they are well worth it.

I had two Britax Isofix seats (one for each of our cars as DS was at nursery), and was super pleased with them. DS now in second stage isofix seat.

If you're anywhere near Worcester, I'm selling the bases now - one seat included which is in perfect condition.

I have one of these. Not sure exactly what you're asking? Yes the base holds onto the Isofix loops in the car. It has a ratchet mechanism to tighten it up. It feels very firm. It also has a "foot" down to the floor - not fixed, just stopping it going any lower (not really sure of it's full purpose). In our car no-one could climb past it, the seat is pretty bulky.

For me the main bonuses were:

  • safety (ie. not relying on me pulling the belt tight enough)
  • positioning - my old seat seemed to tilt the baby forwards if I did it up really tight - the base makes sure the angle is right
  • NO SEAT BELT FAFF! Especially with more than one child to control, this is the winner for me... if leaving the seat in the car you just undo baby's straps, if taking it with you it's one button to get it out.

HTH
Any more questions?

Hi Thanks you two. Sadly Im in london cmot but thanks for offer. Do you necessariy have to buy a new isofix base for each seat - say with Britax if you went up a stage?
Catilla - yes I should have just asked how bulky it was in terms of space and kids getting passed. Thanks for your answer. I will have to go and try. Did either of you clip yours onto a pushchair?

With Britax, only the first stage have a base - I think the only one that transfers in Recaro.

I didn't clip onto a pushchair as I used a pram or sling when he was in that seat, so no advice there.

I have the maxi cosi isofix stage 0 (with 2 bases for our cars) and can't recommend enough, sooooo easy taking baby in and out once the base is fixed in. The base rod/foot does take up quite a lot of room in the seat-well as catilla said, though the car seat is no different to a non-isofix. DS1 (he was 3) could get past the base but not an adult. I've never seen the need to put a car-seat on a pushchair, but I think the maxi-cosi does fit onto a lot of buggies. I was wary of having lo in a car seat for too long.
Ebay great for brand-new prices on the maxi-cosi btw, in case that's the one you choose.

Thanks accessorize queen. I'd forgotten how fiddly and annoying the first stage car seats are with their straps round the back. i didnt use mine originally on a chassis but think I might do with third child. I do seem to remember that you're unclipping them all the time to carry sleeping child all warm and cosy into yours or someone else's house. Will definitely pursue the isofix option I think.

We bought the maxicosi with no.2 and best buy all round I think! I struggled so much first time with the dratted seat belt. Mothercare had both maxicosi and britax to have a look at which was helpful, then of course bought off ebay!
