My ds has just turned 3 and has shown no interest in learning letters etc and I wondered whether these are any good? Does anyone have one?

Hello yes they are okday (buy one 2nd hand with several books) but it is something you often have to sit with them and do. TBH I wouldn't worry about him learning letters etc they have it all to come in reception and a little bit at pre-school/nursery.

hi ... how are you?

Most of the other children at nursery seem to know them ... he can count up to about 15 pretty reliably but isn't interested in recognising numbers and letters beyond that - he is an avid avid reader though

when is his birthday? Let him enjoy his childhood they do state that boys brains aren't ready to learn reading until they are 7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bodiddly · 16/03/2008 14:55

he was 3 at the end of last month ... just thought he might enjoy learning that way but don't want to push him!

they are a bit like reading books IMO. He'll be 4.5 when he goes to school then so loads of time for him to develop and interest.

true true .. just aware that the others all seem so far ahead. anyway, better dash I think sir is awake!

I have a leap pad for sale........

TheAntiFlounce · 16/03/2008 16:06

sod the letters, get the playdoh out. he has all the time in the world to be five, let him be three while he can

I personally think they're a complete waste of money,my 4 year old twin boys had them and barely looked at them.

However they adore real books. I read masses of good quality books a lot from the library and they then got very interested in what words say(for some reason road and shop signs particularly) and then what sounds letters make.

To be honest they learn their sounds sooo quick I wouldn't worry.

My dd is 3 and has no interest in letters but looks at books all day every day-she adores them so I'm not worried at all. Pre-kids I was a primary teacher and literacy co-ordinator.

thanks for that MilaMae - my ds loves books and always has so maybe that will naturally move to him picking things up gradually!

My DS got a 'My First LeapPad' when he was 3. He loves it and has played with it loads.
He's 4 now and doesn't play with it as much now as he has a Leapster which he likes even better. Probably as it's more like the DS and PSP wotzits that his cousins have.
He doesn't know many letters though so not sure it helps anyway!!
