Title says it all really.
Which bed guards are suitable for use with cotbeds?
I'm really dreading taking the sides down from ds cot bed but i know we must soon. It's a shame as he seems so happy in his cotbed.

why do you need to take the sides down, is he climbing out?

nobodysfool · 15/03/2008 21:48

no but he is 3 in June

my friend did the same with her DD, she was in it until she was three!

nobodysfool · 15/03/2008 21:53

He loves it in ther and if i'm honest i love it too.
He woke a 6.45 this morning had a sing to himself then fell back to sleep till nearlt nine.
If there were no sides i'm sure he would have been out playing with his toys then i can kiss lie ins goodbye eh!?

I was given a top tip by a friend. Instead of using a bed guard put somethink like a large towel rolled up under the edge of the mattress. This tilts it up and they don't roll out.

As a cot bed is low to the ground it might be worth a try, put a few cushions on the floor. I've recently moved DD2(2.4) to a bottom bunk wich is low and have used this tip, with success so far! I also tuck her duvet in under the mattress to trap her!

forkhandles · 15/03/2008 21:56

oh that's so sweet singing back to sleep!

nobodysfool · 15/03/2008 21:57

Great idea about the towels. If i put cushions on the floor he would think i have made him a mini trampoline in his room.He tends to wriggle around a lot in the night often ending up upside down so i'm not sure if he would take to being restrained by a duvet.

If he loves it then leave him! He'll still be there when he starts school

nobodysfool · 15/03/2008 21:58

He chats away to his toy monkey in the bed and sings him songs. He is a right little charmer.

my DS is like that, I'll find him pointing down the bed when I check on him!

Yurtgirl · 15/03/2008 22:00

My will be 4 soon and has still got the sides up on her cot bed - and is perfectly happy. Assuming your ds is happy why must you take the sides off?

I cant be fussed atm tbh

nobodysfool · 15/03/2008 22:00

Your probably right but i think he should be in a 'normal' bed at his age he is the eldest in the group of friends i have but the only one still with the sides up.

who cares! I wouldn't give up a 9am wake up for that!

squeaver · 15/03/2008 22:01

If he's not climbing out, leave him there! So what if he's nearly 3?

nobodysfool · 15/03/2008 22:02

And another reason is that he is potty trained but still wears a nappy a night. So how would i ever get him out of them at night if he can't get to a potty if he is 'caged'?

OP posts:
forkhandles · 15/03/2008 22:03

that's a good point.

nobodysfool · 15/03/2008 22:03

I just thought i was "babying" him by keeping him in there.........?

OP posts:
nobodysfool · 15/03/2008 22:04

Hey, i could put a potty next to the cot and see how good his aim is through the bars!!!!!

We've always used beanbags and cushions next to the bed when they move out of the cot. To me a cot rail is one more thing for them to feel they have to climb over

forkhandles · 15/03/2008 22:05

pmsl

nobodysfool · 15/03/2008 22:06

Good idea but he really is a wriigle bum in bed.I would be constantly in and out picking him off the beanbag.

if you do go for a bed guard I have this Tomy folding one on DS's standard single bed and I don't see why it wouldn't fit on a cot bed.

paddingtonbear1 · 15/03/2008 22:13

he still sounds happy where he is, if I were you I'd leave him there a bit longer. I only took the sides off dd's cotbed when she was really showing signs of not wanting them there - I think she was nearer 3. Then we bought her a new duvet, and put her old one on the floor with some cushions in case she fell out. We did use a guard to begin with and at my dad's house, as he had a proper single bed! I've forgotten what it was called, but it was a Tomy one and it folds up.

paddingtonbear1 · 15/03/2008 22:13

Yep - I had the same one as forkhandles!
