Mail order companies we hate

gribber · 20/12/2004 11:15

Following my recent abysmal experience with Jo Jo Maman Bebe, I did a quick trawl of the Mumsnet archives and found I wasn't the only one who had suffered at their hands. As it is the season of ordering online and praying that the goods actually turn up, I thought now might be a good time to ask for other mail order whinges so that we can all take avoiding action. Who do you hate the most? Who has sent you a real turkey?? Which MD would you most like to impale on top of the Christmas tree???

Boden are out of favour with me at the moment (watch out Johnnie!). I ordered some work trousers for dh, which turned out to have an 11 week wait. Fine we thought.

I remembered the order just recently, thinking 'hmmmm.....wonder what happened to the trousers'. Turns out Boden had tried to deliver, failed, and then got the parcel back in tact. Had we been contacted at all, or refunded? Errrrr...no. Not impressed.

Glad I cam on this thread cos I just remembered stuff I ordered from La Redoute nearly 2 months ago still hasn't arrived! Guess who I'll be chasing up tomorrow.

xmascaroltygirl · 22/12/2004 22:39

We do a lot of mail ordering, as we live in rural N.I. - i.e. the sticks of the sticks with very few decent "real" shops.

I have given up on Children's Warehouse, as I find the quality of the clothes simply isn't up to their advertising spin. Got a couple of things from the Cotswold Company that were decent quality, but find them very overpriced and their delivery isn't all that reliable. I also find that Next Directory is going downhill - had a complete nightmare trying to order flowers from their website once, and am increasingly finding that much of what I'd like to order is out of stock.

GLTC, Argos and Amazon I've never had any bother with. My favourite is John Lewis, though.

Cinderellascarrieg · 22/12/2004 22:44

Does 'embarrassing dh by thinking the frock he's ordered for me for Xmas is for HIM & asking leading questions of the "& would your ahem, WIFE, prefer that in the male or female cut, sir?" type' count?

Admittedly it was a rather tarty velvet frock from www.ladyBwear.com & they DO specialise in transvestites! Frock turned up promptly & is fab...

monkeygirl · 22/12/2004 22:49

Another black mark against ELC here - had to chase several times for an order. I've had one problem which went on for about 4 months with John Lewis but apart from that they are very good.

Gold stars from me to Amazon and Next - rarely have a problem with them.

xmascaroltygirl · 22/12/2004 22:50

Those frocks are gorgeous! but blimey, Cinders, you must have one h*ll of a figure!

Can't think of any company I've had really awful service from but I would like to recommend Napiers the Herbalists for what I thought was pretty amazing service (and no I don't get commission from them - honest)
Ordered some eccinachea tincture from them early Monday afternoon, fully expecting not to have it until well after Christmas and it arrived here mid-morning today, beautifully bubble wrapped. And, they sent me 4 e:mails telling me how my order was progressing.
All this for less than £3 delivery charge. I was impressed.

xmascaroltygirl · 22/12/2004 23:00

Actually, I forgot that I'm annoyed at Argos right now.

Mini oven for dd1 from Santa. Looked great in the catalogue. Disclaimer was that it "may appear different from the picture" which I thought meant it would be a different colour or something. But it was an entirely different make - one which turned out to be utter rubbish and is going back to the shop.

Cinderellascarrieg · 22/12/2004 23:05

Xmascaroltygirl...I'm a strapping 6' size 18 with size 9 feet. Tranny sites are my lifeline!

Enideepmidwinter · 22/12/2004 23:07

Urchin are good. GLTC bad.

Weatherwax · 22/12/2004 23:08

Boots have been the worst for me. They left one item out of the box (It was too big). Tried phoning them but was left in a que. Emailed the address they gave on the phone line, it bounced as the address was invalid. Emailed the address on the form with the items received, no response. Used email system on line, which advises you to phone because they are having email problems, finally got a message saying item out of stock cant deliver it. Now I've got to go through it all again to get my refund. My own fault for using them as I had problems last year and had stopped my fairly regular shops with them because of it!

GeorginaA · 03/01/2005 16:14

And the saga continues:

Dear Amazon,

Yet again I get another form letter without any human being apparently having read any of my original complaints. Things I still have not had satisfactory answers to:

a) WHY has this been delayed several times each by 1-2 weeks, when the original display on the 2nd of December was 24 hr dispatch (supposedly in stock).

b) WHY was the first indication that it wasn't going to arrive in time for Christmas long past the time I could have ordered from another retailer, leaving me to go around the shops with 2 small children on Christmas Eve - possibly the busiest time of the year.

c) WHY can you not string a personal response together to even ATTEMPT to scrape some shred of dignity and actual customer service.

d) WHY has my request of reparation not even been acknowledged. I think at this point the very LEAST you could do is some sort of money off voucher for future use.

e) HOW THE HELL am I supposed to cancel as half the order has been dispatched and nothing on the site seems to let me cancel that one item?!!

Looking forward to the next highly amusing auto-generated reply. In the meantime this is getting posted to my blog and every message board I have ever posted to.

How annoying GeorginaA. My Amazon order arrived at the last minute (I ordered at the last minute but they said they could deliver before Christmas) but I'd already emailed thme asking where it was and had an apology and a refund of postage costs. They do seem spectacularly crap/incapable of supplying any RL people don't they? Not even a phone no.

GeorginaA · 03/01/2005 19:30

Have since found their registered company & telephone details Watch this space...

JudgeFlounce: oh I soooooo wish I'd been there to see them get their comeuppance - I do hate companies that try it on in the hope you don't know your rights!

La Redoute. Awfull delivery times, and they once delivered to my old address 18 months after I had moved - they had managed to send catalogue and other materials to my new address so not sure what happened. Anyway The stuff was then all out of stock as it was sale items and I missed out on them

SmokedSamN · 04/01/2005 00:57

I agree that the problem is the delivery companies. La Redoute/Vertbaudet seem to employ people who do the job just for pocket money and you just don't know when they will turn up or if they will bother reading your instructions at all.

We once went away for the weekend and the La Redoute delivery was left next to the front door. Came back to find it still there (amazingly) but the cardboard box was completely soggy from the rain.

Another time we had our parcel left in the real dustbin (not even the recycling bin). I doubt very much that they know our refuse collection timetable.

Have also had problems with JJMB (waiting for ages)

and a similar problem with Boots. I'm still waiting for something I ordered at the start of December as part of a large order from Boots (for Christmas presents). Even if they do deliver it I'm sure I could have bought it for 1/3 of the price in their sale by now. Have had no contact with a real person, but two e-mails telling me the (complete) order has been dispatched.

Next have charged me for stuff that didn't turn up.

Our postman at the old house used to do the trick of pretending we weren't in, which is so infuriating, especially if you have to pay the sorting office for the priviledge of looking after your parcel.

I haven't had problems with Next flowers but I haven't used them recently.

Amazon are generally okay although I have had the magically changing due date happen before.

Letterbox are good. Kittykins (cloth nappies) are good. Natural Collection are good.

BadHair · 07/01/2005 22:34

Was just talking to a friend today who recently had her Verbaudet parcel left in the scoop of a digger that was parked in her yard! She lives on a farm and they often leave stuff in the farm yard with ther pigs rather than walk up a small path to her front door.
My own gripe is with GLTC - they were really snotty when I returned a crap light to them 4 yrs ago and they took 3 months to refund me for it. I'd just had ds1 and was up to my eyes in looking after a new baby, and really didn't need the hassle of checking up on them every week. So I too have boycotted them ever since.

weightwatchingwaterwitch · 10/01/2005 12:47

Not impressed with The White Company. I ordered a dressing gown for ds from their site 2 weeks ago and called today as it hasn't arrived and neither has the other item I ordered (for me) and turns out the children's robe is out of stock and isn't ever coming back into stock. Hmm, would have been nice if they could have told me or emailed me or something. Do wonder what would have happened if I hadn't phoned to ask where the order was, would it EVER have turned up? Also boo hiss to them for having an 0870 number - I used the alternative one though. And the item is still on their website despite being out of stock in all colours. That's crap.

nasa · 10/01/2005 13:04

www - that it quite crap. have to say that white co have always been brilliant when I've used them

flatmouse · 10/01/2005 13:35

What news from Amazon GeroginaA? I had problems wiht my xmas order from them, and each email i sent got one of those "auto-generated" replies, but each time i replied "No that didn't help" i got a voucher so ended up with £17.50 worth of vouchers (and i did infact get all items except 1 pre-xmas)

Casmie · 10/01/2005 14:08

Still no reply from them - should phone them later this week, really.
