Miele vacuum cleaners - are they good?

I've had enough of my Electrolux upright and very nearly threw it out this afternoon. It's relatively new (2 years old) and is useless. Hardly picks up anything and is designed so that it blasts air out the front thus blowing away what you're trying to vacuum up! Aarrgh!!

So I'm looking to replace it with a good non-upright. Good Housekeeping recommend the Miele Cat and Dog TT 5000 - does anyone have this - is it good?

How sad that I'm feeling excited about a new hoover!!

yes I have the miele revolution which is about 7/8 years old MIL has the cat & dog one on my recommendation and says it is loads better than her dysons!!!

Absolutely fab but you do get thru bags it sucks up that much stuff!

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 06/03/2008 17:51

Ooooh, good to know. Our Dyson has had it and we were thinking of a Miele.

Come on ladies, more opinions please

I got one because of my allergies honestly when I got it serviced even the shop/engineer raved about how good/reliable they were. I've got a turbo brush for mine - not sure if that was an extra?

Seona1973 · 06/03/2008 20:05

I have the miele 5280 with a hepa filter and it has great suction and is easy to use. It comes with a parquet head and a turbobrush head as well as the standard head. It also has on-board tools e.g. crevice tool, upholstery tool, etc. I paid about £178 for mine and that seems to be about the cheapest you get that one.

CarGirl · 06/03/2008 22:41

I think mine was the first with the hepa filter and is a 5000, like I said still going strong 8 years on, have it serviced once!

sunnylabsmum · 07/03/2008 07:26

I've got the Miele Hepa one similar to pet one. It has good suction and is reliable too. Have a look online for bags as they are cheaper and you do go through a lot I find. Copes well with Labrador fur, but do think my old Dyson had the edge slightly on Lab fur, although Miele far better with Spaniel fur.....

am I the only one who stands over a bin outside to remove all the stuff . That's the only downside that it's not bagless, but I agree they're very good. I have got a stack of bags in the garage that I bought online, I think they worked out about £1 per bag.

chocolateteapot · 07/03/2008 07:52

Also have cat and dog. There is no comparison to my old dysons, it is loads better.

myalias · 07/03/2008 07:54

Another vote for the cat & dog

booge · 07/03/2008 07:58

Yes great.

MaggieW · 07/03/2008 10:49

Oooh thank you for all that info. Just one more question. The TT5000 spec says it won't do wooden floors - is there any reason why not with the ordinary head?

you wouldnt use the turbobrush on wood floors but you can use the standard head with the brushes extended to do them instead - I think it says that in the specs link on the website above:

'Parquet brushes are most suitable for this flooring although standard floorheads with the brushes extended are also suitable'

The 5280 hepa filter one comes with a turbobrush, parquet head and standard head so is suitable for all floor surfaces.

dizzydixies · 07/03/2008 12:40

another vote for cat and dog - got it after fed up with sh*tey dyson that didn't work properly from day one

its ust dreammyyyyyyyyyyyy

pooka · 07/03/2008 12:42

I had a miele specially for hard floors ( our old house had no carpet). It was fab. THen we moved here and are on 4 floors now, so bought a cat and dog for the carpet-y bits. The brush head fits on the cat and dog too.
Love ove love love love them. They are fantastic vacuum cleaners and I would never buy a different brand. I also sometimes just empty the bag into the bin if I have run out of bags. But I buy cheapo ones anyway rather than the branded miele ones.

MaggieW · 09/03/2008 17:26

oh....my....god....I am now the proud owner of the 5280 and it is amazing. We've just come in from the park and have brought back half the sand pit with us. Normally I'd feel the crunch of sand for several days but one hoover with the Miele and it's all gone. Our poor rugs don't know what has hit them. It really is brilliant - I can't believe a vacuum cleaner can give so much pleasure!!!! Thank you all for your recommendations.
