Children's furniture that doesn't cost the earth?

Just wondering if anyone can suggest somewhere I can buy a wardrobe and first bed for my DD that doesn't cost a small fortune? I particularly want white and a wardrobe with a small rail and shelves in it (drawers underneath too would be useful but not essential). THere are some lovely ones in John Lewis, Mamas and Papas, etc but the wardrobes are all £500 which is just too much. Even Mothercare are pricey for the nice ones. Am I being tight or are there places out there that do nice children's furniture for less?

Ikea?

TheMadHouse · 05/03/2008 19:47

I can second Ikea, resonably priced and good if you put it up correctly.

? mfi

Doesn't Vertbaudet do children's furniture? Great Little trading Company too although I thing they might be a bit pricey.

QuintessentialShadow · 05/03/2008 19:58

Vertbaudet does occasional furniture, not much in terms of big items such as beds and wardrobes. In any event, I think they are pricey.

I agree with Ikea.

I bought a cheap and cheerful pine toddlerbed from mothercare for £59. I think they have white ones too.

Ikea only does one white child's wardrobe which I am not that keen on. Haven't looked at MFI or Vertbaudet - I'll try these, thanks.

Oh Lordy we have just completed the endurance test that is Ikea, but came home with some lovely furniture and it's so reasonable. We just got DD a lovely Hensvik wardrobe from Ikea which has a rail and two good size shelves underneath. We also got the matching shelf unit.

Ikea's first beds are great as they start small and then you can extend them as the child grows this one comes in white or they do one to match the wardrobe above.

And just out of interest we got the Trofast storage for DS's room and it's great, holds loads of stuff and really easy for them to access.

forkhandles, thanks for the link - I hadn't seen this one, why didn't I find it on their website!? It looks great, is it reasonable quality, i.e. not too wobbly or liable to fall apart in 6 months? If so then I'm sold!

No its not wobbly at all, not like their ones with plastic doors are. It's obviously not as sturdy as proper furniture from JL would be but the doors close nicely and it holds loads. For a child's room and for the price you can't go wrong!

beanstalk · 05/03/2008 20:33

Sounds great, thanks for the suggestion, think we will go for that one!

and all the other crap usefull things you hadn't thought of too!

We have the bed and the wardrobe (and also the chest of drawers and the shelving unit) that were linked to for DS1. They are fab and fairly sturdy too.

I was going to get the trofast things for my ds room. His room is really small so when he gets a bed (for his next birthday) he's going to need wardrobe and drawers that will fit in the same space as his wardrobe does now. Anyone tried the wardrobe/drawers combination?

We used the Pax range for my dd's room, with two rails, it worked out very reasonably price-wise and there is a choice of finishes.

EachPeachPearMum · 05/03/2008 22:23

We have this one for dd (just 2). The 'wide' side has a shelf at the top and a hanging rail, but you can choose how far down or up you put them which is handy. The 'narrow' side has adjustable shelves all the way up (I think 6).
The rail round the top is great for keeping suitcases etc on top.

Was easy enough to put up by DH and I. Has been very sturdy so far, and fits all her clothes, bedding, washable nappies etc in. (and she has a lot of clothes -eek)

EachPeachPearMum · 05/03/2008 22:25

BTW- it doesn't look like childrens furniture per se either, so it will grow with her, and not date.

pinkyminky · 05/03/2008 22:38

that looks lovely I wish we could afford it!

EachPeachPearMum · 07/03/2008 21:40

You have to look at cost per use!
It's huge, and will last years and years, so it is a reasonable cost overall, compared with something half the price that inly lasts 2 or 3 years.

MsPontipine · 08/03/2008 00:45

I got the Henvik for my son - was very happy with it - it's really sturdy and comes with bits to attach it to wall. 2 adjustable sheles and fixed bottom. Adjustable rail too so should see him through - Told ds(5) he can take it with him when he gets married!
