I have never bought a carpet before. I want to buy one for the living room, and have it fitted. It will be a cheap, bottom of range carpet.

Please advise me as to how much I should pay, what I need to do, and how much I should pay someone to fit it (NON London).

Thank you, my substitute mummies.

you measure your room very carefully and draw a diagram

go to Carpetright or similar
they have lots of different prices and qualities, from about £3 / sq m.
choose the stuff you want
grab an assisstant
show her your diagram
she works out how much you need to buy
(if your room is an awkward shape she will send a boy round to measure)
you arrange a time for their lads to come round to deliver and fit it. For a charge they will move the furniture too.
pay
leave shop
await fitters

You'll be amazed how quickly they fit it.

colditz · 03/03/2008 22:33

Oh thank you Mrs Badger.

So do you have to have the room totally cleared to get a carpet down in it?

Go to Carpet Right. DON'T go to Allied Carpets. They're twats. Say no more.

Even better, find a little local man, and bribe him.

MrsBadger · 03/03/2008 22:34

actually I don't know

have only ever done it in empty rooms

colditz · 03/03/2008 22:35

I have laminate flooring you see, and it is actually stressting me out. All I hear is the constant clatter of toys and feet, and I have just realised that nobody else's kids make quite so much noise - because their carpet muffles it!

Yes you do - what were you thinking, some sort of transubstantiation?

Tortington · 03/03/2008 22:36

We have Karndean, which is like a cheaper version of Amtico. Soft to the foot, deals with the noise and v hard-wearing. We had pale cream carpets before, put in when I found out I was pregnant with my first - what were we thinking??

FAWKEOFF · 03/03/2008 22:39

sorry for the double post

colditz · 03/03/2008 22:46

I am in Leicestershire, so easiest for Leicester really.

I don't have a car, so they would have to deliver and fit.

I want a plain terracotta (I do not care if it's not fashionable) and I want it to carry upstairs to my hall and landing.

I am presuming I will have to rip up the laminate myself?

I was kind of hoping they would sort of shuffle the furniture around and fit it like that - but ok, I can put the sofa outside

Thanks you lot, I don't know what I would do without you. It's not the sort of thing I can ask RL friends, they all think I'm 27!

One of the local shops that advertises in our local free paper will move your furniture for an extra £30 or something. See if any of them offer that.

Tortington · 03/03/2008 22:52

we had laminate down under our capter - an when we rang the carpet man he was fine with fitting the carpet over laminate. - it just takes a few phone calls to some smaller outlets.

colditz · 03/03/2008 22:54

Oh brilliant, if they could fit the carpet over it!

Does anyone have any experience of Colourbank?

I'd get the carpet delivered, I think, and get a local fitter.

Re furniture, they can usually do one side of room then the other. In terms of what carpet appparently the 80% wool 10% synthetic is the best in terms of easiest to keep clean and most durable.

EdieMcredie · 12/03/2008 08:36

How did you get on Colditz?
