So how sexist IS Lego, in your opinion? There seem to be pitifully few lady Lego figures

We noticed because dd is having a Lego party, and we bought the boxed set of 30 Community Workers, almost all of whom appear to be male. OK, some of them may be women with short hair, or with hair neatly piled up under helmets, etc, but I reckon we only got 2 long-haired people in the whole bunch.

Dd is only inviting girls to this party, and the female figures will be in high demand. Any thoughts on how to get hold of more? We live too far from a Lego store to visit before the party, and the ebay sets I've been looking at are mostly male figures. Any sets you know of which have lots of identifiable females? City Lego is very male dominated

See if you can get any Jack Stone sets on ebay, fauve
There are a few women pilots etc in those
Or try and bulk buy in some Hermiones

Saturn74 · 01/03/2008 21:59

DH is hoping to get the Lego minifig of Princess Leia for his birthday.

(In keyring form, as a present from the DSs)
She is too scantily clad for my liking, so he will get a Chewbacca and think himself lucky.

We have a few Hermione Graingers, and a Prof McGonagall, but that's about it I think.

Fauve · 01/03/2008 22:00

Oh, thanks, hadn't thought of Hermione - or Jack Stone! We have got a Harry Potter owl who's been chucked into the pot.

Dd and friends like the little brown dogs as well

good. my son loves lego city too but what woman really wants to be a builder or oil rig worker

FairyMum · 01/03/2008 22:00

My friend was saying the same just the other day....

Scramble · 01/03/2008 22:01

Easy to interchange them just clip on the girly bob hair onto the torso with overalls on.

marina · 01/03/2008 22:02

But, Fauve...how could you not want some of this?

Yes, but I haven't got any girly bob hair; and they really prefer the pony tails...

Both dd and I must've just blocked out those Belleville sets, Marina. Now you force me to look at them, I can remember they were in the catalogue. But they make us want to puke. It was dd who pointed out how sexist the Community Workers set was - and I do realise the allegation is mainly based on an assumption that short-haired people are male - but, come on, 30 community workers, and only a couple of them female????

OP posts:
southeastastra · 01/03/2008 22:20

but that reflects society doesn't it, in reality how many female bin men do you find

Fauve · 01/03/2008 22:38

Maybe not many female bin men but our community workers include chefs, waiters, firefighters, construction workers, security guards, a surfer dude(? presumably an agency temp from the Antipodes), and so on. And if it's community workers, why not have a few other, less male-dominated professions as well?

Also, I can't see a female police officer in all the police sets - and yet they're not hard to find in real life, are they?

OP posts:
KatyMac · 01/03/2008 22:41

surfer dude=lifeguard?

southeastastra · 01/03/2008 22:43

you can buy individual wigs and head on the website, lego does my head in. once you experience the lego star wars phase you go nuts then spongebob arhg in my day we had the basic set. wheels were the highlight and lights. kids are well spoilt with lego damn tham

Fauve · 01/03/2008 22:44

Oh, yes, possibly. He's got a very male haircut, anyway.

And there's a twitcher, complete with binoculars. Or maybe he's just a neighbourhood peeping Tom.

Never mind the sexism, what about the fact that I can't find bloody house building stuff for love nor money? I loved building lego houses when I was little. But all I can find for ds is some stupid expensive huge house thingy that is for age 8. I just want basic roof tiles, windows and doors. And they do* do some but lego site says 'not available in the UK'. Why the hell not? Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

*I do mind sexism, obv., but want to get house kit sorted first.

Fauve · 01/03/2008 22:49

Oh, thanks, Southeastastra, will search for 'wigs' - have been searching for 'hair'

I hope I never have to face Star Wars. See, I quite like the little people; and I'd never noticed the absence of females till dd pointed it out, and we were having to save the brown-haired ponytail girl for her best friend.

avenanap · 01/03/2008 22:50

Have you seen the LEGO princess Leah (??) from star wars episode 4 (the one with jabba the hut), it's obscene. She's complete with painted bra. Worse then barbie.

Fauve · 01/03/2008 22:52

The stupid expensive huge house thingies are lovely, though, edam. We've got one [proud emoticon] But I agree, we would also like to get some windows and doors etc. We were going to go to Legoland today - for the shop outside, so you don't have to pay for entrance - but found out it's closed till 15 March. There are Lego shops in Bluewater and Milton Keynes if that's any use to you.

southeastastra · 01/03/2008 22:53

lego is just a building set it's fun this thread is mad

avenanap · 01/03/2008 22:55

Lego's not fun when you stand on the bloody stuff at 2am or when you have to spend 2 hours a day picking it up. It's sooo expensive aswell. It's fun for kids but not for parents.

edam · 01/03/2008 22:56

Thanks, Fauve - don't think I could take ds to the shop at Legoland but not allow him inside, that would be a cruel thing to do to a four year old. Just need to hang on until MIL has saved up her Tesco points again...

southeastastra · 01/03/2008 22:59

kids have to play
