Hair straighteners - recommendations please

My Babyliss Pro ones have broken - they lasted just over a year, and weren't that great tbh.

Time to invest in something that will
a) do a great job
b) last longer than that (although I did drop them a few weeks before they packed up).

Any recommendations please? I'm going to buy some this afternoon.

Are GHDs really, really worth the money? I did a search and Mark Hill ones came up as recommended. Any others?

thank you

GHDs

nailpolish · 29/02/2008 11:02

i think hte wide plates are a gimmick

regular ghds are the best imo

MyMummiesAScummyMummy · 29/02/2008 11:05

The wide plate i beleive is if you have long hair, therefore more of your hair is in contact with the plates at any one time. I have FHI hair straighteners, they were recommended by my hairdresser I purchased them for £70 and the kit contained a nice paddle brush, hot sauce to protect your hair and crocodile clips to section hair whilst styling. My sister has GHD's and whilst they're very good mine are probably as good, and not half as expensive . I just can't justify spending that much money on hair straightenrs IYSWIM. Also worth noting that my hairdresser said if the plates are tourmaline, heat to 230 degrees, and they come with a warranty then they are going to be good straighteners.

wide plate ones a re better for longer and thicker/afro hair i think. just get the regular ones. they are easier to style with

my GHDs broke when i dropped them on the floor and so i sent them off to GHD to be repaired. I didnt mind paying to get them fixed, but they sent me a brand new pair!!

VictorianSqualor · 29/02/2008 11:13

Oooh, straighteners. DP bought me some for xmas, they are T3, by bespoke labs and they are the best ones I've ever had.
I used to have some great ones from a friends salon but they broke and every pair I tried after were shit, except these.

Seems it's easier said than done to actually buy a pair of ghds (rather than order over the net - we're out at work all day so wouldn't be here to take delivery).

Any thoughts? Tesco, Boots and Argos don't stock them, Sally's could order but it would take a week.

I want need them now! [flounce]

thanks

I thought you could go into most hair salons (those who are stockists obv) and buy them?

pedilia · 29/02/2008 17:21

I have always used GHD's until my last set broke, DH bought me a set Of Mark Hill straightners and I would not change them at all

They heat up to the same temp as GHD's and are just as good, I have natuarlly curly hair so they must be good to do mine.
Boots were doing them half price

glitterfairy · 29/02/2008 17:28

GHDs every time. Also good products to keep hair shiny and beautiful.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 29/02/2008 17:29

I am selling my BaByliss ones for peanuts if you want them.

lou33 · 29/02/2008 17:30

i have these

i am told they have the same plates as ghd's

MargeSimpsonMyAlterEgo · 29/02/2008 17:38

I've had my GHDs for over four years and use them nearly every day. Fabulous. And heat up quicker than you can say "I'm worth it!"

largeginandtonic · 29/02/2008 17:42

GHD my hair is Sarah Jessica Parker curly (sadly i do not look like her) and they work. Have tried many over the years all crapola compared to them.

ScruffyTeddy · 29/02/2008 17:59

GHDs are great, much quicker than regular straighteners. Ive used both the slim and the wide ones. The ones with the larger plates are good for really curly/thick hair like mine, and they have a little thing on the end you can hold without burning your fingers! However I have the slim ones and you can curl and flick etc (as strange as that sounds) with these. They dont take much longer than the wide ones.

ballbaby · 29/02/2008 20:24

GHDs changed my life Well they give me an extra 3 hours a week anyway because i don't need to blow dry my hair straight anymore - i just let it dry natrually and straighten it in 3 - 4 mins

lateylate · 01/03/2008 19:39

Update - being an impatient madam and wanting to look sleek to go out last night, I bought the FHI ones from Sally's

I don't know how they'd compare with GHDs - price-wise they were a bit cheaper, but not much...but they did a much better job than my old Babyliss ones...and my hair has stayed straight all day, even surviving an 8-mile cycle ride under a helmet.

The only thing that peeves me a bit is that both Sallys and FHI only guarantee them free from defects for six months....not sure if that's normal...I'd expect at least a year warranty under the Sale of Goods Act.

I could have taken out an extra warranty for a total of two years for £9 but didn't bother.
