OMG! Ebay "Berenguer re-born dolls"

Has anyone else seen these?

They are dolls which have been sculpted to look like newborn/young babies. They are so lifelike it's freaky.

Don't think I'd buy one. Except, maybe to represent my ds as a baby. Perhaps that's why they get bought.

what about this one!?

merrymarthamoo · 14/12/2004 21:12

As somone who finds dolls creepy anyway (dolls and clowns ) those completely freak me out. As ds2 would say, "I not like 'em!"

morningpaper · 14/12/2004 21:12

Socci I think that you're talking about the standard issue NHS baby dolls. They are the right sort of weight and shape as newborns.

But these are all hand-crafted and sell for a fecking FORTUNE! There's some money in it that's for sure.

Urgh that preemie one said:
"'Real~to~hold' carefully filled with baby fat"

BLEugh that sounds really gross!

ladymuck · 14/12/2004 21:20

Definitely weird, but what a money-spinner...

morningpaper · 14/12/2004 21:31

UGH some come with heartbeats and self-warming bodies!

I need to stop looking now...

spacedonkey · 14/12/2004 21:32

ooh yes moo, i agree, and my ds has always hated dolls with closing eyes. He used to make me take the "horrible dolls" out of the room before he would go to sleep.

spacedonkey · 14/12/2004 21:32

Obviously the horrible dolls belong to his sister.

I think it seems to depend on the artist's work and their reputation - some artists are really well known so their work goes for more.

I've been looking this up all evening...

Gross innit?

One site says that they feel EXACTLY like a newborn, and you even have to support their heads... surely that makes them exactly like a DEAD newborn? God it's really revolting.

Amanda3266 · 14/12/2004 22:18

Regarding the "dead newborn" thought.

I was at a study day (during the time I was a midwife) and one of the tutors bought one of these dolls in. She offered it around to be held and many of the midwives wouldn't do so as it reminded them too much of a stillborn baby. At the time I'd not had any children of my own and although I'd delivered hundreds of babies I'd been fortunate enough not be present at a stillbirth. Just six weeks later it happened and OMG yes - it did feel the same. No wonder the more experienced midwives couldn't cuddle this doll.

Amanda that's awful.

Amanda3266 · 14/12/2004 22:23

Yes - really awful. It was many years ago (more than 10) now but all this time later I am still in touch with this baby's Mum - she's got 2 more children now.

Some of these dolls are works of art I know.I can hardly bear to look at the dolls with the closed eyes though.

that is really dreadful

Cinderellascarrieg · 14/12/2004 22:25

That's HORRIBLE. The whole thing just gives me the shudders...ugh.

Amanda3266 · 14/12/2004 22:27

Oddly enough, the tutor who bought the doll in was also a midwife and it obviously didn't worry her at all. In fact she said it represented her son as a baby. Not only that but she'd had another doll made to represent her daughter as a baby. I suppose that's quite touching really. Don't think I could do it though - although it seems a sweet idea.
