Beware FB marketplace AnyVan scam!

Just thought I'd make a thread, but this is a warning to be extra watchful when selling on FB Marketplace.

Had a scammer reach out to me claiming to want to pick the items up via AnyVan courier which is a legit company, so was happy to supply email for the AnyVan confirmation email on pickup time. Spidey senses kept tingling, I thought if he asks me for anything further, it's most likely a scam. He was pushy and overly insistent that I make sure I got the email, and then wanted me to screenshot the email.

Instant block and reported the email- saw a thread on here warning about this exact scam as the situation was unfolding and knew where it was headed.
Big indicator for this scam is claiming that there'll be extra insurance on the envelope containing the money that is sent alongside the AnyVan courier, and that it will be included in the sum. That and the email and extra pushiness of course!

You know, thanks for that. I googled it and even though I'm not on this net, the Mumsnet post came up. I'll say thank you on theirs as well. I saw this thread. That Anyvan just popped up and it didn't seem right at all. After reading here I told them no, reported it as a scam and blocked them. So, thank you!

I've just had this AnyVan scam on Marketplace. As soon as they asked for "insurance" money I knew it was a scam. I Googled 'AnyVan scam' and saw this post so THANK YOU ❤. I reported them and blocked them.
Scams get boring!

Peej1978 · 29/08/2023 16:24

Just wanted to say thank you for this original post, I had someone from Cardiff who wanted to send an ANYVAN service to collect a £50 pool table from Surrey. They asked for several details, and as the post said, my Spidey senses were tingling, LoL. I reported and blocked after reading this. The table has only been on for 3 days. Beware everyone.

Hello all, I have just experienced this AnyVan scam on Facebook Marketplace.

Just this afternoon I placed an advert to sell some furniture and got a response within an hour from someone who seemed interested. They asked the usual questions and seemed like a legit buyer.

They stated they were very busy with work so would send 3 people from AnyVan to come and collect the furniture with an envelope of cash. I was skeptical but continued the conversation. They then said they require your name, address, email address, total price and time of collection requested. I obliged as you typically need this information anyway except the total price which was never haggled and was clear in my advert.

The next steps is where I believed I was being played was when they pressed for a screenshot of the email confirmation. The layout of the email body along with the word courier being spelled as courrier in the email address increased my gut feeling of the scam. They continue to remind you that you need to pay £47 insurance to assure safe delivery of the cash envelope by clicking a button on the email. I did not press this.

I confirmed this was a scam by trying to place a booking on AnyVans legitimate company website. The email received was completely different in style and you can only select 1 or 2 men to come with the van not 3 as the "buyer" stated would be sent. The website does not ask for a £47 insurance coverage, only a generic insurance through Zurich at around £6.

The email from the scam is [email protected]

Thanks for this post - my 6th sense was warning me too and thanks to this post I was saved - I told the ‘buyer’ they were busted 💪, reported them then blocked them 😈

Greenfishy · 14/09/2023 17:18

Same as everyone else - it just didn’t feel right so I googled anyvan scam and came up with this thread. I sent them the link to this thread 🤣 then reported and blocked

Same here. As soon as I posted an item for sale on the FB Marketplace, I recieved the same message - seemingly a Hungarian old lady is "busy at work tomorrow" but will send the ANYVAN man with an envelope of money to collect. Left the chat right away. I couldn't report them though. The report control desplayed a message that this function is not available for my area. Strange. I live in London! How did you, ladies, report them?

Tarathomas · 21/10/2023 09:39

I’ve had exactly the same thing happen to me last night. He got very threatening, saying that I didn’t want to upset him and that I would face the consequences.
Then said that I’d be sued by the company.
I’ve now received an email from Anyvan, which I haven’t opened yet, but says that a complaint has been made against me.
The same as you, I couldn’t report it on Facebook either because it wasn’t available in my area!🤷‍♀️
It’s made me very nervous and I think I’m going to report it to the police

ProudGirlMum · 23/10/2023 14:47

Hello everyone,

I've decided to add something to this threat, because I've expererienced this exact scam just yesterday.
A guy on marketplace inquired about an item I was selling for £150.
Similar story: He wants to collect the next day at 5pm but he's busy working so he'll send AnyVan to pick up and deliver the cash in envelope. He's covering transportation costs. I've used Anyvan in the past and know they're legitimate company. So said ok.

He then asked for Name, email address, address, sum and time. I never give my real address to strangers so used another one of public place. The intention was that we'll take the item there and give it to the Anyvan guy. But it felt weird I had to include the price, he knew it and didn't haggle either. Another weird thing was the pick up time, he said 5pm. It seems that these scammers follow like a scenario and doesn't try to make it more realistic. Also he added herart emojis to my message with name, address, email address, collection time and ammount (later felt for me like "Aha, I got you! 😄)

After I gave this info he mentioned the insurance about the envelope with cash and nothing about how much is it. Another red flag. I asked Isn't it supposed to be paid everything when booking?
He ignored my question and said that he'll let me know in 10 min after everything is booked. Then asked if I've got the email and as I didn't respond immeadiately, he asked again. I said yes, but I'm not paying anything in advance.
He went on explaining that the insurance of £47 will be added to the envelope and if I don't pay he won't be refunded. Then I reported and blocked him.If you click on the link to pay it takes you to https://www.mobiletopup.co.uk
I repeated I'm not paying, reported and blocked him.
The email used now to pretend it's from AnyVan is [email protected]

I can confirm AnyVan doesn't use gmail but is usually @anyvan.com
It didn't make sense to me why would anyone pay transport and insurance for something worth £150 and maybe will pay double. Also Why cash? When you book with AnyVan or any other company you pay via bank so why not pay me via bank as well, or just schedule a day when you can come to collect and pay cash if you don't want this on your bank statement.
And in the email AnyVan was always highligted.
Also on my phone the images and link to pay were blocked, while on the computer no. But in both cases the email was in the junk folder.
I've attached also images of how the email looks.

I hope this info and pictures are helpful, because although it's not very well planned scam, it's enough to fool someone.

I'm a dad, not a mum - but I googled this scam and saw this thread so I thought I'd add to it.
A Bulgarian apparently living in the Cotswolds tried it on with me today - unfortunately for him his dyslexia seemed to let him down - the company email provided was 'NYVAN Compagnie' which was a bit of a big clue to the clumsy attempt so I didn't send the £20 insurance requested and told him his fortune.

Pixiepooo · 24/05/2024 15:43

Thank you - this has just happened to me. Thought so weird someone would pay AnyVan to collect a pair of £20 curtains!!!
she is currently telling me ‘its simple to understand’ lol

MillyMollyMandy01 · 19/06/2024 15:50

I’ve been selling some furniture on marketplace and I’m so sick of would-be scammers, I’ve honestly had so many contact me. They all start with “I’m busy at work so can’t there myself…..”
then it’s either sending a friend/sibling to collect or a courier with the money.
All are scams.
Couriers do not offer a payments service.
I block and report and amended my ads to say “buyer to collect, cash on collection only, no couriers etc”. It’s slowed down the onslaught but not stopped them entirely. Btw all the scam buyers seem to have quite similar profile names so at least it makes genuine potential buyers stand out.

NkH · 02/12/2024 18:21

Thank you for this post. I’ve just been contacted by someone who wanted to buy an item but wanted to come tomorrow. He’s working so needs to collect via anyvan letter. Didn’t make sense so I googled it. This came up. How do they end up scamming you?
