How to select a new (2nd hand) car

Yesterday had yet another nightmare day with the car breaking down on the M25, baby and toddler in the back, on my own, and an hour and a half wait before we got towed back home. This is the fourth time something like this has happened and it's time to get rid of the car.

Our current motor os a BMW 5 series estate, which DH bought when I was PG especially because he thought it would be a good, safe, reliable family car. You'd think a German car would be good. It is shit. So I don't care at all about what make the new car is, I just want something I can rely on to get us from A to B.

The mechanic who picked me up said Japanese cars are the best family cars. I need to know how to go about finding what model would suit us best, and how to assess what they should cost etc. Also how to work out how much we should get for ours when we offload it. Are there any websites you can use for this sort of info? Am going to buy What Car magazine but really want to research the issue properly so we end up with something we can afford, and which is reliable.

That should get you started!

Honest John is great, if you email him with your requirements he will make specific recommendations and tell you what you should get for the old one.
