Try Osbourne Boks for there "How to Draw" range - bought one for a ten year old at Christmas - he loves it

tiredemma · 19/02/2008 21:27

I have one of those 'how to draw books' - You can have it if you like (ds isnt interested)- Its very ggod

Threadworm · 19/02/2008 21:27

My DS2 really loves a book we got him that shows you step-by-step how to draw all kinds of characters.

It's called Drawing is Fun; publisher is Arcturus. But I'm sure there are lots of similar books. £7.99.

Even real art-numpties like me can produce something pleasing with it. Lots of fun.

Threadworm · 19/02/2008 21:28

oh. Ebveryone has said same as me but quicker. Forgot to say, my DS is nine so good match.

janeite · 19/02/2008 21:29

We've bought a few people a set of pastels and a pastels paper pad and that has gone down well. You can get both for around £7 or so and it's a bit "different".

Charcoals might be fun too!

Beauregard · 19/02/2008 21:40

Thanks for the replies i hadn't thought of getting a book

tiredemma-That is very kind of you thankyou.

email me at ELW662 @ bham . ac. uk

Its just gathering dust on the shelf, I will forward it to you.

FrannyandZooey · 19/02/2008 21:42

oh I was going to suggest encaustic wax but I think it is pricey
if you visit an art shop you may well be able to find something similarly unusual for the right price

Greensleeves · 19/02/2008 21:43

the foil-scratching pictures are really nice I think, my ds1 likes them

Colinfirth · 19/02/2008 21:46

Those giant hardback sketchbooks (the bound ones) are fun because you can write and illustrate your own book in one. Or you can get starter sets of those really good professional felt tips for around that price or a set of fimo. Lots of art shops seem to be contantly having sales on one thing or another so going in and poking around is a good idea.

MegBusset · 19/02/2008 21:47

How about this?

Colinfirth · 19/02/2008 21:48

If you are in London, there is a wonderful shop in Angel which has a million art project kits for kids in the £10 - £15 range. Or you can make up your own collection of things like interesting papers, metallic crayons, craft bits and pieces...

Beauregard · 19/02/2008 21:56

Some great ideas here thankyou.

Megbusset -That colouring book is lovely.

It is for my good friends ds .

There are some FAB Klutz art books - I'll have a look for a link. Otherwise, pastels and pastel paper (don't forget a can of fixative) really good quality colouring pencils, or sketching pencils. Grown up ones for this cage, though, not children's ones.

Aero · 19/02/2008 22:02

My ds1 is 9 also and loves the painting by numbers sets, foil scrapr sets, pastels or charcoal and a drawing pad, or a set of shading pencils etc. He also loves the how to draw websites he's found, so a drawing book would go down well with him too.

Spidermama · 19/02/2008 22:03

My kids love pastels especially with differnt coloured card to use them on.

Also you get some good modelling clay for kids on ebay. Different colours. You bake it in an ordinary oven and it's pretty hard.

seeker · 19/02/2008 22:04

this is really good - dd got this and the watercolour one when she was 9ish and still uses them at 12.

mistressmiggins · 19/02/2008 22:07

The Works have cheap canvas plus paints you can buy for under £10

My DS painted one of these - similar ones in IQEA sell for £45!!!!!

My Ds's painting is just as good & cost me £1

Beauregard · 19/02/2008 22:11

mistressmiggins

Thanks for all the great ideas.

tiredemma -meant to say i have mailed you

how about a little pinhole camera set??? i run workshops for kids of this age as part of my job and making cameras out of tin cans, boxes etc and then developing your own photos is by far the most popular one - it's like magic!

Twiglett · 19/02/2008 22:14

highly recommend seeker's choice

DS got this for recent 7th birthday .. and it's fabulous .. he's loving it and it's the one thing I want to go 'give it to me, give it to me, let me have a go' on

SorenLorensen · 19/02/2008 22:18

On the same sort of lines these books are fab - this one and the Oodles of Doodles book I bought both in The Works before Christmas for ds2's birthday in December and then had to buy them for ds1 for Christmas as well They are part-drawn drawing books - so you fill in the blanks - but really inventive ideas - loads of fun.

Beauregard · 19/02/2008 22:20

lol Twig ,yes it does look great i think i may get it and buy some paper and pencils etc to go with it.

Not sure about a pinhole camera?
