Presents for teachers

Do people get each individual teacher a present or one to share. My 5 year old has two teachers, my 3 year old is at pre school and nursery and subsequently has 8 teachers. Any ideas for gifts, i think they are all wonderful ( bar one)and want to put some thought into it.

Also are my sons supposed to seand cards to every class mate? it would take forever. Thankyou.

I apologise if this thread has been done before Wink

Can't help FF, but great question as ds1 is also 3 and in pre-school and also has quite a few 'teachers' so will look forward to some ideas!

Anyone!?

I don't really want to go down the 'big tin of biscuits/choc' route!

A friend of mine said she bought a scented candle for each teacher that was really prettily (a word?!) wrapped and quite inexpensive - might be an idea?

tabitha · 10/12/2004 12:18

I would get your eldest's teachers a present each and get one to share, eg box of chocs/biscuits, for the nursery teachers.
My ds (age7) never sends cards, because I would have to do it and I can't be ars*d (he's not that bothered) if my dds (13 & 17) want to send them, then that's up to them.

5goldendillydallys · 10/12/2004 12:19

I have to get presents too and the nursery specifically asked me to send a card to everyone on DDs class - it took me ages.
I was thinking of raiding a Boots 3 for two aisle

Gobbledigoose · 10/12/2004 12:19

Oh, good idea! Boots 3 for 2 - hadn't thought of that!

tabitha · 10/12/2004 12:20

As for ideas of what to give for the eldest one's teachers, what about home-made sweets/biscuits that he's helped to make. I'm sure some of the mumsnetters who are teachers will have better ideas about what they'd like to receive.

expatkat · 10/12/2004 12:21

IMO each individual teacher gets a present (my kids have 6 total!) and def NOT cards to everyone in the class unless for some reason your boys are really keen to do that.

Hulababy · 10/12/2004 12:25

This year at DD's new nursery, a group of parents have got together and asked for all parents to make a donation to them (£5 recommendation) and it will be passed on to the owner to give to ll staff - for use to help towards cost of their staff party next Friday.

In past, when DD had more than 2 teachers at nursery we bought one card and big box of chocolates to shae, and then a snmall gift for the children's room - toy or book, etc.

I think candles is a lovely idea, any teachers appreciate a candle, or would you prefer a bottle of wine, tell us popsy et al

As an escaped teacher, wine always goes down well, or a huge box of chocolate chip cookies (Tesco have them on offer at 1/2 price £1.49!!) that they can hide in the stockroom and raid in an emergency i.e. all the time!!

fairyfly · 10/12/2004 12:39

so even though it is the normal general gift, its not boring, it's actually needed?

Yorkiegirl · 10/12/2004 12:41

wine is good
Candles too
My personal favourite is bubble bath, boring I know but a few small bottles last all year!
Another nice gift is those Christmas pudding truffles from Thorntons, they do packs of two or even singles. I would much rather get those than a big box of choccies.
Handmade gifts are also lovely, even if they don't turn out well! Those are the presents I personally treasure, and never throw away.

cazzybabs · 10/12/2004 13:35

AS a teacher I say you can't go wrong with a bottle of wine and a homedrawn card. You get lots of chocolates and most teachers being women are on diets or or other thing I like to get is smellies or a book voucher. For the pre-school a nice box of biscuits for the staff room or some fruit or something nice (non-alcholic) to drink during lunch.

Sozie · 10/12/2004 14:03

My dd's at Nursery and has 2 teachers so we are doing a "paint your own mug" for each of them and a bottle of plonk. She also sent cards to all her class mates but I don't expect she will receive one from all. I think it's nice to encourage giving so that's why I do it.

popsycal · 10/12/2004 14:16

wine is very much appreciated..more so than chocs IMHO!

Can't go wrong with candles either.

I would get DS1's 2 teachers a small gift each and something for the nursery teachers to share.......

Carameli · 10/12/2004 14:26

I used to be a teacher. Agree with others here a bottle of wine is much more appreciated than chocs. Also get your kids to do their own card. I| loved getting homemade cards much more than shop bought ones.

popsycal · 10/12/2004 14:28

and get ds1 to write a lovely little thank you note....i stick nice letters on the wall of my cupboard at work so when I have a rubbish day, i can read them"
:)

codswallop · 10/12/2004 14:28

shit! you got me
pmsl

TinselTamum · 10/12/2004 14:35

When it's for lots of teachers, like at nursery, I usually got a basket full of stuff from Body Shop or a nicer place we had here whose name I've forgotten, or a set of stuff from somewhere like Whittards with coffee, biscuits, a mug and so on. That way each person has some element of coice, and it's something they can take home as opposed to a tin of biscuits, for example.

jac34 · 10/12/2004 14:42

Luckily My DS's are in the same year 1 class, but they have two teachers. So I bought one a small box of lovely chocs from Thorntons and the other a flower growing kit fom Boots.

KateandtheElves · 10/12/2004 14:55

My firend is a teacher and thinks the best presents are gift certificates!

mikeyjon · 10/12/2004 15:04

loved the mug painting idea.

popsycal · 10/12/2004 15:05
