FIREGUARDS - advice please/ can someone tell me how they work??

Hello
My DD has started crawling and consequently discovered our very dirty open fire and very dangerous poker.
Not knowing anything about babies and children as DD is my first, I HAD imagined I would buy a plastic adaptable stairgate type thing which I would undo in evenings so we could continue to enjoy open fire. Having done a kiddiecare and john lewis internet search, I now understand there are special contraptions called Fireguards which look okay, but are fixed to the wall yet still seem to allow you to use fire.
Would someone be able to tell me how this works please? as I don't want to buy one over the internet only to return it because not appropriate.
Thanks in advance Mnetters!

We bought this black metal fireguard, from Mothercare. It has an extension panel in the middle because it's a wide fireplace. Although it folds over at the top, which helps prevent toys being thrown into the open fire, there is enough of a gap to prod fire and add more coal/logs as necessary.

It fixes to the wall with a clip either side so it's very easy to undo and pull it away from the fire for cleaning & lighting.

Mothercare have a whole page of guards starting at about £7.99.

Excellent!! Knew someone would be able to help.
I think I'm going to buy that exact same one - it looks nice enough in the picture.
THANK YOU!!

We've got the Mothercare one too. Only gripe is that the clips that hold it together don't seem to stay on for very long if you keep having to open it/move it for lighting the fire etc. Ours is now cable-tied in various places and I've only just managed to stop DD putting the fallen clips in her mouth on several occasions.
