I just got my new one yesterday!!

It's a John Lewis 1203 which was rated very well in the recent Which? report. I have done 4 loads already and so far so good. Very quiet, 1200 spin speed and child lock (essential in this house!).

£299 with free delivery and 3 year warranty.

thanks sidge...

any more

Miele. Because they are fab, and last for ever. Seriously, they are expected to last 20 years, and generally manage longer than that. My mother's one is heading for 30 and has only broken down one (when we bunged it up with beach sand ).

Mine is 10 years and still going strong, and my cousin inherited my grandmother's old one, which is 30ish and still doing its stuff.

They are more expensive than other brands, but worth it when you calculate how long they last. Buy the bottom of the range one, no need for the fancy features.

pobletsmum · 16/02/2008 14:18

I hate my (expensive) Bosch as I find it noisy, and not as effective as my old AEG at getting things clean. I was really upset to have to leave my AEG (only about 2 yrs old) when we moved house, as part of the sale.

As soon as I have saved enough pennies, I will be replacing my 1 yr old Bosch machine with this AEG one. I like the bigger capacity (7kg) and fast spin speed, but they do cheaper models if these things aren't important to you. As far as I am aware, the John Lewis machines are made by the same group (AEG Electrolux) as the AEG machines, so are probably good too. However, I have never had any problems with ANY AEG machine (have had 2 dishwashers - old & new house, tumble drier, fridge, hob etc), whereas I have had problems with other appliances by supposedly 'excellent' brands (Miele dishwasher didn't dry things, Bosch - various issues), so would stick with AEG every time. Many AEG appliances come with free 5 yr parts & labour warranty too (look on AEG website for details, not via retailers).

I personally would absolutely NEVER buy a hotpoint, Hoover or Servis machine.

Good luck choosing!

ShinyDysonHereICome · 16/02/2008 14:29

I second the suggestion of AEG.

Despite Miele being the absolute best AEG seems like the next best thing according to the Which reports.

I am having this fabulous washer/dryer delivered in 10 days time as it seemed to have such excellent reviews>

Got a great deal at Dixons

lazarou · 16/02/2008 14:29

We have an indesit. it's ok, does the job. I went to look at vacuum cleaners the other day and the sales bloke showed us the miele ones, and he started jumping up and down on one of them to demonstrate how durable they are! Then he got a pound coin out and started bashing one of hte washing machines with it
So, if I was going to buy a new one, it would be a miele

Nemoandthefishes · 16/02/2008 14:45

only thing with the miele is its an awful lot of money for something that has a small wash load..5kg./.to get 6kg or more would mean spending £600 plus

I actually don't rate Miele products that well, after a bad experience with a dishwasher, and a really arrogant service guy. John Lewis eventually refunded my money & I got an AEG which was cheaper and 10x better. My mum has a very old Miele, and it's still going strong after lots of use & abuse, but even the Miele service guy said they're not made to the same standards now as they used to be.

PTA · 16/02/2008 17:24

Whatever you do, do not get an Ariston!!!! There is a design fault with them in that the gap between the rim and the drum is too wide and things get sucked down and ruined. I have lost count of the number of sleeves that have been ripped this way. Small things (socks ect) are obviously put in a washing bag but the last repair guy told me that you can apparently get a big bag for the whole wash!!! WTF isn't that what the machine is for!

Vinegar · 17/02/2008 09:33

We had a hotpoint aquarius which was okay. We now have a Miele, so far it has been great. It is new, so have to see how long it will last.

sunnylabsmum · 17/02/2008 18:45

another vote for AEG. My machine is over 10 yes old, Mums first AEG was replaced at 18yrs for an AEG washer/dryer and original she gave away is allegedly still going strong. Have an AEG dishwasher- 10ys+ and AEG fridge freezer.5+yrs. Had AEG cooker and micro fitted in kitchen as we LOVE AEG so much!!! having said that I have been tempted by a MIELE IF AEG ever gave up!!!!

Nemoandthefishes · 17/02/2008 20:59

anymore??

Dh is leaning towards either a hotpoint aquaris or the john lewis one I think

ShinyDysonHereICome · 17/02/2008 21:01

Hotpoint aren't good nowadays longevity wise.

I researched extensively ( and verry boringly I might add ) including searching the 'which' reviews and found AEG to be about the best for my price range. John Lewis ones are also meant to be very good as - I think- they are made by the same company.

Nemoandthefishes · 17/02/2008 21:02

thanks shiney

John lewis are made by zanussi as fas as I know.

OP posts:
ShinyDysonHereICome · 17/02/2008 21:12

Just found This and yes it confirms that some are manufactured by AEG and some by Zanussi-both very reputable makes I think

My AEG washer/dryer was a fabulous deal and will be delievered in a weeks time. Once you've found one you want it's well worth searching all the supermarket electrical sites to find the best deal. Sainsburys, Tesco's, Co-op, Asda and even Boots have their own sites. You even clock up clubcard points which is great.

Dixons have got a £10 voucher for purchases of £250 or over which made them the cheapest but I think John Lewis offer free delivery and a 3 year guarantee

pobletsmum · 18/02/2008 10:23

Hotpoint really don't rate well as they breakdown a lot. They may be cheap, but will almost certainly need to be replaced quicker. A sales person in John Lewis told me Hotpoint & similar are built to last 3 yrs, AEG 10 years, Miele lifetime (25yrs+). Those figures are based on something like 3-4 washes a week, so would be reduced for your family as you are doing more washes.

Still think you should consider AEG (as I said there are cheaper ones and some with 5yr guarantees), or failing that go for the John Lewis one.

Nemoandthefishes · 18/02/2008 10:26

poblet thanks..dh spoke to some of the engineers at work[comet] this morning and he said of the 20 jobs he has today they are all on hotpoint machines so that is definetly out of the list.

We do around 10-14 washes a day

OP posts:
WaynettaSlob · 18/02/2008 10:38

I have to second Miele - they are expensive but great, and the spin is totally silent. i think we have have this one

Sidge · 18/02/2008 11:49

10-14 washes a DAY???

Do you mean a week? (Or are you really mucky? )

pobletsmum · 18/02/2008 12:04

I assume Nemo meant per week Sidge - the OP said 1-2 per day. Can you imagine 14 per day LOL!

stoppinattwo · 18/02/2008 12:15

Nemo.....do you want my washing machine mans' number??? he is very good

Sidge · 18/02/2008 13:00

LOL pobletsmum I guessed it was a typo! I'm a bit OCD myself and even I don't do 14 loads a day

Birdly · 18/02/2008 13:29

Don't buy a Hotpoint!!!!!!! Our tumble drier lasted just over a year and the washing machine less than 4 years. Don't do it!

We replaced the tumbler with a John Lewis one and the washing machine with a Miele (the latter on the recommendation of the independent bloke who came out to try to fix the dead Hotpoint washing machine).

Swaliswan · 18/02/2008 13:47

I love my new hotpoint. It's an aqualtis so is the all-singing all-dancing version but our old aquarius lasted for over 7 years including washing reusable nappies when it was already 6 years old.
