Tile-topped tables.

I've been looking for a table for our kitchen and have seen one in Index that fits almost all my criteria. It's cheap, oblong (don't want a round one)and the chairs are nice sturdy-looking pine ones with splayed legs. At the moment we have quite upright ones and ds can tip them back too easily. The only thing is, it has a tiled top which looks quite nice but I'm not sure how practical it is. Dh is convinced that it will crack or the grouting will become horribly stained if it's used for baking or the kids' art projects. Also that it will be annoying for dd trying to do her homework on an uneven surface.

Has anyone else got a table like this and have you had any problems? Any advice gratefully received!

Yep we've got a tile top butcher's block and all bits get stuck/caught in the grouting. Not very hygienic. We only use it to prepare the dog food.

Thanks Carla. I suppose I'd better keep looking then!

I agree with Carla - my kitchen worktops are tiled and they're a pain to keep clean. Definitely not recommended.

I have tiled worktops and a tiled tabletop in the kitchen and I absolutely hate them. The are quite small tiles so it is impossible to write on the table, and he grout is discoloured and cracked and falling out in the areas of heavy use.

Currently working on dh to get it all replaced.

We've got a tile topped dining table and it's fine! Tiles are fairly big though. On the other hand, our new house has small tiles on the kitchen worktops and they are horrible.

Thanks for the advice. I've now found a nice wooden one for half the price and ordered that. Of course, you proved dh right but never mind!
