Anyone got a Quinny Freestyle?

debinaustria · 14/02/2008 08:01

HI, having narrowed down my search to 2 , 3 wheelers I have seen these Quinny Freestyle older models for sale at good prices. I was put off the Quinny Speedi as the seat doesn't go upright but I think with the Freestyle it does.

So, anyone?

Yes, I've got the one with the tilting wheel and I love it. It is very bulky, and the aspects I don't like are:

Seat is cotton canvas and shows watermarks very badly.

When folded, the inside of the hood gets dirtied by the front wheel.

Seat does not turn round to face pusher as it does on the new swivel wheel version.

It is very heavy and is a bit of a hassle for getting in and out of the car but if you can leave it up most of the time it is great.

The raincover is extremely bulky and I bought a generic one for convenience which is much better.

Despite the weight it is very easy to push on all terrains with the air tyres and full suspension. Don't forget to buy a tube of tyre slime and a puncture repair kit.

The tilting wheel is much better than a fixed one, but it is still quite hard to turn in a shop aisle so I usually just lift the front wheel and turn it on the rear wheels. The wheel can be locked for off-road use but I keep mine on tilt the whole time and find it very easy to use in fields or on tracks.

The shopping basket is quite small but as the puschair is so heavy you can load the handlebars with shopping too without it tipping.

The seat unit is very large compared to a lot of pushchairs so suitable for a taller child. It takes the maxi-cosi cabrio car seat and the dreami carrycot too so it is really practical over a long period.

That probably seems like a lot of negatives but despite all that I love it and wouldn't be without it. I have noticed a lot of them in nearly new condition for sale at bargain prices and I think that is because people buy them without realising quite how large and heavy they are. I have another smaller pushchair too but the freestyle is my main one and I highly recommend it. I'm seriously considering buying another to keep at my mum's house!

hi debinaustria---yes the freestyle is lovely,
very comfortable for child,
very easy to push,steer

catski · 16/02/2008 22:52

I have the freestyle - it's a beast of a pushchair and I think if you want an off-roader you can't get better - it's extremely comfortable for the baby and the pushchair part can go on forwards, backwards and has about 4 different reclining positions. The disadvantages of course are that it's heavy, takes up a lot of room in a car, and I also find it quite cumbersome to put up and down. If you live in austria you really should check out getting one from www.kidsroom.de (a german site but they deliver internationally) - I got mine from there and was very very happy with the service (they delivered to sweden in less than a week) and do very competitive prices for quinny products.

debinaustria · 17/02/2008 09:42

Catski - that site's good - thanks. How has the Quinny been in the snow with the tilting wheel?
Does the seat also sit upright - I know the Quinny speedi doesn't.
Have I got it right - can you have the seat facing you?

Thanks

Hi deb

I had a freestyle for my dd who is now 4. We used it with the maxi cosi car seat and the dreami carrycot and then when she was old enough she was in the seat.
We have also used it for our ds who is now 18 months but I had another baby in December so we had to buy a double.

I'd second all the points that Yeni mentioned but as she says, despite all of them, it is a very good pushchair. Substantial and takes a good hammering

With regards to the material of the chair, I found mixing a bowl of washing powder and using a hard brush, brought it up as good as new.

Nbg · 17/02/2008 09:57

Oh and the seat does sit upright but you cannot have it rear facing.
If you use the maxi cosi car seat and carry cot, they do face you.
You can use the car seat up until they grow out of it, which in my dd's case she was 1.

debinaustria · 17/02/2008 14:29

Thanks NBQ - I really want one that's rear facing so I think it's out of the running, but thanks for answering. We moved here from Leyburn , N Yorks, where are you?

OP posts:
Nbg · 18/02/2008 14:25

Oh we're in Northallerton!
Leyburn is lovely. My friends parents are in Preston. Do you know it?

My dh wants to move to Austria for the snow
In fact he's going to Alpendorf next month with my dd.
Where are you?

Just thinking about the pushchair, I think the Quinny Buzz rear faces and its also compatible with the car seat and carrycot.

Before we got the double I had a Hauck Infinity which rear faces and I absolutely loved it.
Its bascially a copy of the Bugaboo.

Nbg · 18/02/2008 14:27

Just looked at your profile.

I'm going to show dh when he comes home.
He will be so so jealous!

debinaustria · 18/02/2008 15:48

I taught at a school in Northallerton for a while and I know Preston.

St Johann Alpendorf is just up the road from us - about 20 minutes or so.

With the pushchairs - it has to have big wheels and no double wheels as the snow gets stuck between them

Whats it like to live there? Do you have family out there?

Dh has also been to Kitzbuhel and Schaldming. Schladming being his favourite place.

Maybe the Buzz will be the best option for you. Not enitirely sure if the front wheel tilts like the Freestyle though.
Have you thought about looking at the Land Rover ones?

LIZS · 18/02/2008 15:54

I had a Fashion which rear faced and was suitable from birth w/o the Dreami. Front wheel was fixed but good over snow, later models had a better handbrake on the handle bar. Similar era to the older Freestyle

debinaustria · 18/02/2008 15:59

No family out here, we're the only English here, it's a small village but a great ski area and very quiet compared to some resorts(like Schladming)

My other 2 favourite pushchairs are German makes - Hartan and Teutonia.

OP posts:
catski · 18/02/2008 22:48

Deb - yes, the quinny freestyle pushchair can face you, or face forwards. I think it's the Speedi which is only forwards facing.

The seat does sit upright and has 4 different 'levels' going down to about 98% flat.

I think the 'tilting' wheel is on older models. My front wheel (I have the three-wheeler, not sure about the 4-wheeler) swivels 360 degrees and is also lockable for use on snow, sand or gravel. It has been absolutely fine on snow so far.

The only bugbears I have with it are that it's heavy, takes up a lot of room and I find it a bit stiff to put up and down (although that might just be my particular model). The tires and suspension on it are absolutely fantastic though and make for a very comfortable ride even out in the swedish woods where I live! It's also very very easy to push - I can twirl in and of doors pushing with one hand no probs.

catski · 18/02/2008 22:52

I should have added - I have a friend here with a quinny buzz and she's not happy with it's performance on snow.
