Tripp Trapp highchairs - is the baby set worth bothering with?

Just thought I'd ask the question of other Tripp Trapp users - is it worth getting the baby set? Given that DD3 won't be in it until she's sitting well anyway, are the extra back rest and cushions worth the amount they cost? It doesn't look from the picture like the back rest goes that much higher anyway - surely you could just plonk any washable cushion in for comfort?

Thanks for any tips before I waste my money...

does the baby set contain the bit at the front that stops them toppling forward? If so, then it is definitely worth it. If it is just the padded seat bit, then no...
(extra back rest useful as head support tbh...)

MrsBadger · 12/02/2008 14:57

the baby set has the front bar in - you really need that for

are tripp trapps fab generally? thinking of offering to buy one for DB's baby but would appreciate some feedback. Only a slight hijack.... sorry!!! ta

geekgirl · 12/02/2008 14:57

You don't really need the higher backrest, but you do need the bar at the front to stop them falling until they're about 18 months old (IIRC - my youngest is 4 now so it's all a bit hazy).
And don't get the cushion - complete waste of money and nightmare to keep clean.

MrsBadger · 12/02/2008 14:58

I think they are fab, but MIL paid for ours...

cmotdibbler · 12/02/2008 15:00

Def need the front bar, but if you want, I could send you the cushions and back rest FFP. The cushions do show the brunt of DSs enthusiasm.
We are still using the bar at 20 months.

Catkin08 · 12/02/2008 15:01

Front bar is essential but other bits just make getting (slightly chubby ) DS in and out more difficult!
We got one because they look fab and last for years and are really easy to clean. I often feel a bit sorry for DS though as it's pretty hard and austere compared to all the comfy padded ones he's tried out at his little friends houses!

Also, the cushions are a bit rubbish - ours went in the wash almost immediately as they got dirty very quickly and the edges started to fray.

onebatmother · 12/02/2008 15:03

no, wouldn't bother - the front bar comes with chair, right? You just mean the cushion pad and back?

platesmasher · 12/02/2008 15:05

Yep, the cushions are a liability. They are washable but you need to remove the whole baby set with an allan key to take the seat cushion off. I think the chairs are great though...and yes, you'll need the bar at the front.
KB, we were bought ours as gifts for our two children and we love them. Our 3 year old is so much more comfortable at the table now that he doesn't have to kneel on an adult chair and his eating has improved too.

GreenGlassGoblin · 12/02/2008 15:05

Front bar doesn't come with the chair! Agree that it is the only reason for buying the baby set though, and don't bother with the cushions. Back in action (the link in Mrs badger's post) were great, very professional and polite as well as fast and (relatively) cheap - totally recommend them!

we dont take ours apart to get the bottom cushion off, only the front bar/centre strap but on the new style ones it says not to use bottom cushion on baby seat as space is too restricted, plus much easier to slide baby in and out without it and ahhh yes the mess, much nicer to wipe clean!
I have a purple baby set with matching cushions stuffed away somewhere as dd is 5 and left it behind yonks ago it is the
older better style with the full wooden high back, the new plastic clip on one is annoying for dirt and dust IMO
