What to buy for Newborn

Hi Everyone

I was hoping someone might be able to help me??
My baby is due end of June, (we found out he is a boy) and i am clueless about what we should buy for him to wear. Everyone we have asked has said that he will just be in sleepsuits and bodysuits for the first few weeks and that we should just buy a few basics until we know his size. We feel stupid as we dont actually know what babies wear!!
So far we have bought a pack of 6 white sleepsuits in Newborn and a pack of 7 short sleeved bodysuits in Newborn. We have also bought a pack of 3 scratchmits. We also have a few sleepsuits and bodysuits in 0-3 months. Do we need to buy a couple of Newborn hats and socks? Also we are unsure as to what the bodysuits are for? . Do they go under sleepsuits or on their own and should we be buying short sleeved, long sleeved or sleeveless as it will be summer? We have heard that you get a lot of outfits given as presents so to hold off from buying them. Any help would be much appreciated .

ahhh, I hadn't thought of that - my brain is clearly too full of whether to moses basket or not at the moment

Essentials, not for the baby...

Millions of sanitary pads (Maternity pads were way over priced)

Stock up on: loo roll, kitchen roll, juice/squash, cereals (for quick snacks!), tins, freezer stuff, washing powder, washing up liquid (for others to use of course....) and lots of mega cheap pants (Paper pants are fowl - asda do packs of 'basic' pants that are mega cheap)and somthing to celbrate the baby's birth (even breast feeding Mum;s can have a sip of cava!).

may I re-stress the benefits of filling your freezer (and any other freezers pepople while let you use) with dinners you can just shove in the microwave.....

Somthing we were really pleased we did was have my sister and her boyfriend over for dinner the afternoon dd came home. They cooked us a delicous meal, boys did a little shopping for celebratory drinks (just a few sips!) while me and my sister sorted a few bits. We really felt like [gently] celebrating and being pampered and avoided the 'now what' getting home feeling.,#

Good luck! Remember the shops are always oped so now stress over what to buy!

I think your list sounds fine. I don't go as much for sleepsuits as for the baby bundlers, they're sort of like nightshirts, and fab for nappy changes and last a lot longer than suits.
I would not get pramsuits. I know some people love them, but I prefer layers, and they don't grow out of blankets like they grow out of pram suits. You can get velour all in ones that are quite cosy.
A june baby will hopefully not need a lot of clothes. DS was a late May baby and he mainly wore bodysuits and socks!
muslins are really useful
cotton wool is all you need to clean baby when he's new.
I use the disposable breast pads at first then move onto washables as things settle down.

We bought a crib instead of a moses basket and it has been fab. Both my babies slept in it for 7 months, and the neighbour's borrowed it for the same amount of time, and we are going to dust it off for our next baby. Actually, MIL bought the crib. I think I did better with it than friends did with moses baskets. But we did have a pram with carrycot for downstairs, visiting etc. because of course they are not very portable!

Yes, we co-sleep. I'd recommend it to anyone. We all get a good night's sleep and babies are so snuggly. I can't quite remember when my daughter went into her own bed because it was so trouble-free. Aged around two, I think.
My little boy is five months now and has been sleeping through almost from the beginning. If you are at all interested, Deborah Jackson's "Three in a Bed" tells you all about the practicalities and history of co-sleeping, and is very readable.

Ooh yes, stock up on looroll bargains from May onwards. You will be weeing even more and constantly checking for a show by then and once the baby's arrived you'll have lots of lochia and visitors too.
